Cochin Thread!!!

I have a question about the SOP. I purchased the copy from amazon, but turned out that is a reprint from the 1930's or something very old.

Bantam Cochins have been recognized long enough that they are in this copy. Has the SOP for bantams changed over the years or would this information still be a correct guide for our breeding program? Thanks for any help.
Without comparing it to a current SOP I don't know. If what you are wanting to raise is not in that copy I suggest something newer for sure.

You want a Bantam Standard at least 1978 or newer for bantams or a Standard of Perfection at least 1983 or newer for Large fowl. I think that those years would be after the last varieties were added to Cochins. A new paperback Bantam Standard is available from the ABA ($30)as well as in hardback($45). If you have varieties that are not APA recognized but are ABA recognized then you want to get the Bantam Standard. The APA Standard of perfection is about $60 and covers both large fowl and bantams (but not some varieties of bantams). Hope I didn't complicate it too much.

No, you didn't complicate it at all.

Thanks. I only have one color of bantam cochin, partridge, and they are in the old edition I have. I just didn't know if type had evolved over the years or any thing. I should just buy the APA SOP since I have LF Ameraucanas also. They had not been developed yet when this book I have came out

I am pretty sure that partridge bantam cochins are included in the modern APA book.

So I have another question and I did a search but did not find any threads about it. Is there a common defect in cochin feet? Is it common for them to have short outer toes? I swear I remember a conversation about it last year, but maybe it was pertaining to silkies instead. I am seeing a significant percentage of chicks with shortened outer toes to varying degrees from every hatch so far, and I am putting hatching from this pair on hold while I sort this out. Thanks for any information.

The breed standard states:

Toes - four, straight, well and evenly spread, middle and outer toes completely feathered to ends.

In the defect section : Deductions for crooked toe, missing toe nail, bare middle toe is a DQ, missing part of toe. It also states that featherlegged breeds are not penalized for rudimentary outer toe.

Craig I have a mottled cochin that had half of the front of his comb tore off. I am assuming that his show days are over. Once it's healed it would be assumed to be a defect instead of an injury. Am I correct?

I think you are correct in thinking that his show days are over. If I have it wrong please correct me Tom.
Tom recently earned his APA judge license and know the guidelines much better than I.
