Cochin Thread!!!

Just remember, Splash is not an accepted variety and can only receive BV or RV and nothing more. But if you do choose to go with Blue you need to breed in Splash to get the good Blue color that is desired, as well as Black.

I have a question about my standard cochin. Is she a mottled or a lace? I only have the 1 hen and for the fun of it I was going to hatch out her eggs from my Maran roo. Has any one crossed a Splash maran over a standard cochin? I expect to have heavy body and dark eggs with feather shanks and toes offspring. It was the plumage color I was wondering about? And if there is any side effects of the mix. Pookey my cochin hen when she was young with a roo I no longer have and LaMar my Maran Who has feathered shanks but not toes.

The hen is a Silver Laced

When you say blue, are you talking about the kind that is linked with splash, or the kind that has darker hackles and I see listed as blue in shows? Or, are they the same? My feeling is that the kids will be best off if what they start with in parents will pretty much show up in offspring--so black parents=black offspring, etc. Is that not the case in blue? What about mottled? I'm sure they can branch out later, but I think keeping it simple at first will be a better plan. Sorry to have so many questions! Btw, I've gone over to Cochin international and looked around. My, they have some beautiful birds! I think I'm getting a better eye for what a cochin is supposed to look like in a general way, but there are finer points about it's feet, eyes, etc that I can't seem to keep stuffed in my brain.

Well, I suppose we'll learn.

Blue to Blue = 50% Blue, 25% Splash, 25% Black
Splash to Blue = 50% Blue, 50% Splash
Splash to Black = 100% Blue
Splash to Splash = 100% Splash
Blue to Black = 50% Blue, 50% Black
Black to Black = 100% Black

Quote: The (Andalusian) Blue gene (Bl) is considered incomplete dominant, and will produce (based on an average of 100 chicks hatched), the following offspring:

Blue X Blue = 50% Blue . 25% Black , 25% Splash

Blue X Splash = 50% Blue , 50% Splash

Blue X Black = 50% Blue, 50% Black

Splash X Black = 100% Blue

Black X Black = 100% Black

Splash X Splash = 100% Splash

That's very interesting. How do you get Partridge color? Can you only get it from PartridgeXPartridge? What about the Gold Laced and Silver Laced, how do you get those?

Yes Partridge is PartridgexPartridge. Even then only a few have proper lacing and or correct feather shaft colors. Gold Laced and Silver Laced are GLxGL and SLx SL. Easiest and cheapest way to get any of these colors is to buy them. All are relatively scarce if looking for good quality birds. GL and SL works in progress birds are still better than hatchery quality but not yet up to the quality level of solid color birds.

Hmm that sucks. Partridge is my favorite but I can't for the life of me find them anywhere! I have a few right now and a few chicks that are the offspring of these but besides that I just can't find them.
Thanks for clearing it up. So, which is the most dominant color for Cochins?
