Cochin Thread!!!

Very nice Nancy! An earlyChristmas present!
Our anniversary (Oct), my birthday (Nov) and Christmas... my husband's been very good to me!

I set some eggs last week that came from Georgia, I let them settle for 3 days. I candled them today at 7 days, the air cells are not set, they seem to be very runny but the chicks are developing. I'm worried they won't make it. Anybody got any ideas? My humidity was at 29, maybe too much? Should I turn off the turners for a day or so? I've never had this happen with any eggs I've gotten in the mail before!
I've had shipped eggs with detatched air cells.. I keep the turner off for at least the first half of incubation. Hopefully that'll help.

Stunning!!

Thanks!

When the female is a year old or maybe a bit before and the roo..........????? maybe 9 months or so, and yes it is a combination of things. Something you may not want to hear, but it's an important issue, and that's about the practice of artificial insemination. From the looks of your birds, I'm going to guess that you will need to, the better the birds the more help they need. Yours appear to have plenty of fluff, so you may never have fertile eggs without help. You're going to get arguments about this and I know some people have good luck with their birds breeding naturally but trust me, it may be an issue. I have one rooster that is an excellent roo and is able to fertilize any hen that he is with, but I've got more roos that can't get the job done and need assistance.

I agree too. Last year I didn't have a single fertile egg. Lot's of duty do'n go'n on but no fertile eggs. I will be doing AI this spring.
Too much fluff. Now if you trim around the vent you may have better luck and lilcrow is right.... there will be a lot of folks argue with us on AI.

p.s.if i do decide to go with trying to hatch some..... the first two eggs (laid wed & thurs.) have been put in the fridge, would it be too late to take them back out to her nest? or should I just wait for her to lay others and see if she will sit on them?
Those in the fridge are no good for hatching. !st eggs laid are rarely fertile. I sure won't hatch eggs this time of year. If the pullet does it then fine but personally I would not use an incubator unless I wanted to deal with chicks in the house for 4-6 weeks. That's just me.

The bird in your avatar and the above picture sure are nice looking birds.

Sorry Craig, but you are very wrong on this. EVERY egg I hatch has been in the fridge, sometimes for 2-3 weeks. I hatch a lot of chicks and ducklings. My chicken eggs go in my incubators and the duck eggs go under broody hens. I slowly warm the eggs up before incubation.

I didn't have any luck hatching mine that arrived this way. They started developing but quit!

Someone on here said to incubate them in the carton standing straight up without turning for the entire hatch. They said to only slightly tilt the carton twice a day.

good luck! Let us know how it goes. I hope you had better luck than I did. Maybe someone else will have better advice for you.
