Cochin Thread!!!

ok these were in the pen -- buff, black, gray, mottled, splash, blue, and red. So I am guessing it could be anytime. All the eggs were marked "frizzle", so I am hoping for at least one in the batch, but if they all hatch, I won't complain. I am hoping for red and black, but again, healthy is top priority.

Thank you for the reply.

I just got this gorgeous Blue (bantam) hen today from Jamie Matts. :) She is for my Splash program.

I've been thinking about breeding the " blue wheaten" pullets from my accidental wheaten based MF pen.

I also got a few splash cockerels that have both black and some have blue columbian markings like this

There are some with better combs than this one!

I guessing/wondering if I'll lose the lace pattern or not. Use the blue marked or black marked? Thoughts?
proper lacing requires homozygous columbian, pattern gene, and melanizing gene...

Ok, I have a very newbie question about cochins. Are they a full term egg hatch or do they tend to hatch early? At 99+ what will they do? First time cochin owner/hatcher and just wondering as I have 4 in lock down at 99.5 degrees. They are 19 days today. Should I be watching them tomorrow, or do you think they will go to Saturday?

Thanks for any/all advice. And please don't thump me for asking.

I have had birds hatch at 18 days, and birds hatch up to 3 days late, but I have noticed the birds that hatch earlier or on the due date ate the healthiest and seem to have more vigor than the chicks hatched after the due date. My birds hatch at various times as Craig mentioned. My Whites hatch around day 19-20, but the Reds I have noticed hatch anywhere from day 18 to day 21.

Also, if you purchased eggs and they were marked frizzle, keep an eye out for curlies as they mature. A lot of people have frizzles, but not everyone knows to keep frizzles separated from one another and not let them breed. Good luck with your hatch.

Thank you Mr Ree, all the eggs were marked Frizzle, but as I understand it only the hens were frizzled. And I am not sure if all those colors I listed were under one roo or not. Again, I am hoping for black and red, but I will be pretty happy with healthy chicks. As I am typing, one eggs is bouncing around in the hatcher, so maybe by morning, I will have my first cochin chicks.

Tomorrow will be day 20. And 3 Silkie chicks are still in there that hatched tonight around 7:30p. And I am very happy with them.

Again, thanks for the reply. I will watch(and hope) for those wind-blown feathers
