Cochin Thread!!!

I would tend to agree that this occurs predominately in males, whether it is a heritable trait or not could be up for debate. I have noticed that the majority of my birds tend to do this during rapid growth phases when body weight exceeds the capacity of the frame they have built, to combat this I have begun switching all my birds to a 16% pellet when they are about 12 to 16 weeks, this slows the rate of growth and allows the frame to grow at a good pace while keeping the weight under control. Lots of yankee cochin breeders use oats to do the same thing, slow the weight gain and build the frame; I think this is the key in keeping the birds from slipping tendons. Also, getting them out of brooders and on the ground with grass helps as well, nothing like fresh air, excercise and salad!!

Whole oats or rolled?

How about cactus? Grass is unknown around here.

I'm certain tumbleweeds, sagebrush and cactus would work fine! Rolled Oats if you can get them. My wife, daughter and I will be coming to Farmington in November to visit the Four Corners Show, hope to see you there. We love Gene and Bert Stark and just don't get to see them so we decided it was time to go visit them. We haven't been to this show since '05 and it is one of our favorites, the only drawback is the 13 hour drive out, but I do like looking at the New Mexico landscape, absolutely beautiful!
Get a bunch of cochins raised and we'll have an Asiatic class that will draw some attention.

Blessings,

Bo

Well, I have 3 chicks left from the Feb. hatch that should be old enough and my 1 and 2 year olds should be done molting by then, but I think anything set now would be immature. You just beat the Twisted feather hand me downs and I'll be happy.

We're just starting out with having chickens. We picked up two bantam hens on Saturday. So far we've gotten two eggs (one yesterday, one today) from one of them. It's very nice how friendly they are. My 5-year-old loves that she can pick them up and baby them.

Hello All,
I am planning on starting my cochin bantam flock soon. However, I have run into a problem. I do not know what color to get. I love all of them and get seem to pick a favorite. Please help me out! What should I start with? TY - Katie.

If you want to show then Black ,White , Blue or Mottled would be the most obvious choices. If you want to breed then consider getting from a respected breeder. Most will not sell eggs or chicks. If you want to just have a mixed flock to enjoy running around in the yard the breed has many choices. What ever you do . I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.
