Cochin Thread!!!

I am on the fence whether my chick is a d'uccle or a cochin. Do Cochins have long feathers on the back of their knees at about 3 weeks? She looks like a Porcelain d'Uccle but does not have the beard. So confused...

Sorry. Pictures ARE worth a thousand words.

Quote: a properly laced bird must be homozygous for 3 separate mutations. the Pattern geme (Pg), the Columbian gene (Co) and the Melanizing gene (Ml). the diagram below shows what birds that are homozygous for columbian exhibit, when the other genes are heterozygous (only carry 1 copy of the gene needed) for either or both of the other mutations.

if you look at the diagram below, the top right image shows the wider lacing, indicating that these birds are heterozygous for the pattern gene, while the lower right image are birds homozygous for all 3 genes required for proper lacing...

(edit: i loaded the wrong image)

this is why i suggested outcrossing to a columbian for better type. because the results would be more easily recognizable when crossing the F1 offspring (top left image) back to a laced bird, to choose the best of the F2 birds for continuation in the lines.

for the F2 generation, I would keep the best typed birds, with preference for the bottom right. though the other phenotypes (visible appearances) are still usable, they are not correct and would need to be bred back only to the best laced birds possible, in the hopes of producing more correct lacing. (the top left would be my LAST choice among the options.)

i would say it doesn't have enough foot feathering for either breed. the only thing i can say, is it's most likely a rooster.
Sorry this is the one I though it was on the same page, but apparently not. Haha my bad. What little common sense I have I'm very lucky to use it haha. This one I believe is a cochin.
i looked back and saw that was probably it...
