Cochin Thread!!!

Woke up this morning to at least 26 chicks hatched so far. Blacks, Columbians, GL project, Silver Penciled and Partridge in this bunch for sure. More to go and more every week. Today is a GOOD day!
Hurray!! That's wonderful Craig and now you don't have to worry about anything external happening to them. They're safe and happy in your beautiful new building.

I am still so paranoid that these are all safely locked in my shop for several weeks more. Finally getting good numbers of chicks out on the ground except for Silver Laced. They will eventually get moved down the hill to the new building if and when the weather ever becomes spring. Snow and sleet again yesterday but none piled up.

Also finally getting Columbian chicks on the ground.

We had a gorgeous day yesterday, but I'm guessing we're getting today what you had yesterday, it's supposed to rain and get colder. Maybe we're paying for that beautiful spring we had last year.

I've been putting off asking this a while, since I feel a little silly. I've always had bantam cochins but these ones that are closer to the puffball standard have such big fluffy bottoms, I am having trouble keeping them poop-free. Now I don't mind bathing them in my kitchen sink once in a while, but once I start hatching more I worry I won't be able to keep up with them without big nasty poop-balls clinging to their backsides all the time. Besides trimming their backside feathers, is there anything I can change in their diet or other ways to help with this? How do you keep your cochins clean? I feed the Blue Seal Layer, Purina scratch, and leftover veggies from the kitchen occasionally.

Cochins are doing FANTASTIC at the shows this Spring! But for those of you that can't get to one of your local shows, the Cochins International Spring Online Show is almost here!! Entries will be accepted between May 1st and May 7th - same format and rules as the Winter Show. I very happy to announce that our guest Judge will be Bill Post of NY. Many of you will know him from the ShowBirdBid and BYC forums, where he is always on hand to offer fair critiques and sound advice as NYREDS.

Thanks! This is very informative as well.

My little half japanese-half cochin laid her first egg since molting. She looks all cochin except she is much littler than even the japanese and her eggs are about 1/3 the size of the other bantams. Don't know why I am telling you all about this except I find my flock constantly amazing.
