Cochin Thread!!!

Hi all...I'm just starting my flock and have been researching Cochins. I'm in love! I have a couple of questions though that I have been unable to find answers for (and I've been reading for days).

At this point I'm undecided between LF or bantam. I understand that LFs can get very big and have no problem with that it would like a little further info. Because this breed is so large, how small are the bantams in relation to other bantam breeds - particularly Silkies? Egg size in relation to other bantams?

I'm just south of Atlanta and summers are hot! I don't see Cochins listed on any of the "heat hardy" lists but have noticed other members in hot climates with beautiful specimens. My question is how well does the breed handle heat? Also, does one size take the heat better than the other?

Okay, one more...The portion of my coop I'm dedicating to the Cochins will have a 4x5 interior and an 8x10 run. If I decided to go with the LF, any idea on how many this size coop would accommodate?

Sorry for all the questions but I'm truly in love with these chickens and I want to get it right. Thanks in advance for any and all advice. :D

Hello, I have both Silkies and bantam Cochins. My Cochins are much smaller then the Silkies. They lay eggs on a daily basis but they are considerably smaller then the Silkie eggs. They are really sweet little things. If you are looking for pets or really friendly birds, then you should definitely get them. If you are looking for eggs then maybe the LF would be a better choice for you. The bantam eggs are maybe the size of a half dollar. Hope that helps : )

Ki4got, Sorry my quote button doesn't seem to want to work this morning.
I just posted on your other post with a reply for you. I have both.
Thank you your reply and the feedback. Five to six LF would be a good amount for me and I think I've (almost) decided to go with LF. Still curious about the size difference to other bantams. The Cochin bantams may be plenty big for me. Ugh, so confused.

Anyone else have currently have Silkies and Cochins and can weigh in on the size difference? Or better yet, have pictures? :D

I have five hens, one is a Cochin. A friend has a baby Cochin that might be a boy. If so, she can't keep him in the city, and has offered him to me. I have had bad roos and do not want another. How are Cochin roosters, in your experience, temperament wise?

I have numerous Cochin roos. Mine are all bantam. They are all friendly easy to pick up and hold. They have never been aggressive toward me or anyone else. However sometimes they have picked on another roo in the pen. But they are all great with their ladies.

I am hoping to love my little bantam cochin babies. I got three from the feed store as "friends" for a single silkie chick I hatched. Im sure they wont be quality birds but may find a few nice ones if I like the breed. Many years ago I had one little Bantam Cochin hen I a remember really liking her. I thought they were smaller than Silkies but couldnt remember.

Thank you so much for your reply. I made the decision to go with LF and found a good breeder within driving distance. I completed my first incubation one week ago and have eight beautiful little chicks!
