Hi all...I'm just starting my flock and have been researching Cochins. I'm in love! I have a couple of questions though that I have been unable to find answers for (and I've been reading for days).
At this point I'm undecided between LF or bantam. I understand that LFs can get very big and have no problem with that it would like a little further info. Because this breed is so large, how small are the bantams in relation to other bantam breeds - particularly Silkies? Egg size in relation to other bantams?
I'm just south of Atlanta and summers are hot! I don't see Cochins listed on any of the "heat hardy" lists but have noticed other members in hot climates with beautiful specimens. My question is how well does the breed handle heat? Also, does one size take the heat better than the other?
Okay, one more...The portion of my coop I'm dedicating to the Cochins will have a 4x5 interior and an 8x10 run. If I decided to go with the LF, any idea on how many this size coop would accommodate?
Sorry for all the questions but I'm truly in love with these chickens and I want to get it right. Thanks in advance for any and all advice.![]()
Hello, I have both Silkies and bantam Cochins. My Cochins are much smaller then the Silkies. They lay eggs on a daily basis but they are considerably smaller then the Silkie eggs. They are really sweet little things. If you are looking for pets or really friendly birds, then you should definitely get them. If you are looking for eggs then maybe the LF would be a better choice for you. The bantam eggs are maybe the size of a half dollar. Hope that helps : )
