Cochin Thread!!!

The top pen is about 3 months old. The bottom pen more like 10 weeks. Top pen is Columbian, Partridge, Silver Penciled, Black and one project cross bird at the bottom left. Bottom pen also has some Golden Laced in there as well- this picture only caught about half the birds in that pen. I should have a lot more Columbians than I do but I was trying to use a sterile bird for breeding and it took me a while to figure out that it wasn't just a poor trim job that was causing the infertile eggs. I put a nice Cockerel in and now I have some decent ones developing.

Thanks Craig, this will be a great help.

I hear what you saying, and i think there are two points to consider.

Firstly, if someone posts a chick and asks for opinions, i am afraid that people will offer them in all forms, this being a public forum means you can get advice / comments from anyone, if you think they are a bit short then ask them to elaborate further, i have learned some invaluable things by asking people to explain a bit more(and they are generally willing to do so)

Thanks for your response. Got the right answer here

If you go to the Standard of perfection or the Bantam Standard there are specifics for every variety. The description on the Cochin International website is the general description that all Cochins should strive to meet. When in doubt check the Bantam Standard (ABA)or the Standard of Perfection (APA). the dark beak you may be refering to is described in the SOP as swarthy Yellow. You were getting honest evaluation. Just keep asking until you get your questions answered.

Knowing that there are different standards for different colors is helpful.

ok I've got 2 roos i'd like to share pics of... both boys are moulting a bit tho, so have a few gaps here and there...

the first one was the only to hatch from some shipped eggs, the silver laced. got some girls with poor lacing, but better than none at all I guess, to put him with.
he's a pita but gets to stay only because of what he is, until I can get a better roo. he's not mean or anything, just likes to harass all the girls all the time. lol

the next 2 are kepiru. a product of my own mille fleur breeding efforts.
I REALLY like this boy. so far the best roo I've grown out from that pen.

I should also mention, both boys are this years' hatches, so about 5-6 months old...

Hi Ki4got, The boy out of your mille pen looks great.

in your mille breeding pens, what age do you cull for colour in the cockerels, and what made you keep kepiru over others? It must be a very hard choice, as there are so many things involved in this pattern that express differently based on age, like the mottling involved.

i dont know much about laced, but you look to have a good single lace on that boy, looks complete in the chest and saddle, which i know from other threads, is a lot harder to achieve then people think. Congrats!

as for kepiru, I kept him based on his conformation over anything color wise... I've found a lot of the cockerels get those odd stiff central tail feathers, and to me that's a big no-no... my older male has them when he's moulting but they blend in once he's done. but this guy had a nice cushion from the start.

as for the laced, I got lucky. the rest of the chicks hatched from the same breeder more recently (that I didn't lose to the raccoon yesterday) have poor lacing at best. 2 of the pullets are white with just tips the other I have left has more like wide shafts, not really true lacing. hoping she matures and develops better. they're only 7-8 weeks old right now.

got the raccoon last night tho but he did manage to snag one of my mfc hens. the dog chased him off her tho so she's inside recovering from a couple bite marks.

for her.

Sanna how soon does frizzle show up in chicks?
I have no idea. This is my first time with frizzles.
I'm assuming the frizzling will start showing once their feathers start growing in. I have one chick that's already starting with the wing feathers and they look pretty darn smooth to me. lol One chick looks like the feathers MIGHT be curling...or maybe I'm just seeing things because I want a frizzle? Too early to tell.

this is what frizzle feathering looks like. This was a self blue barred at about 1 week. You can see the feathers already are different.

at 1.5 weeks a bit more obvious

and by now you know it's frizzled :)
