Cochin Thread!!!

actually she looks like a product of gold laced birds that were, themselves, incompletely laced, thus she's only got part of the required genes.  (pattern, melanizing and Columbian are needed to produce proper lacing.)

Thank you both for reply,im absolutly lost with this gene stuff,my mental capacity is about as small as my chickens!! So could I ask if you had this hen, would you breed her? If so what would you breed her with?

If the color of a bird (variety) is not identifiable, breeding that bird will most likely give you chicks that are a mix of lots of genes....

Meaning trouble down the road when you breed them again. Trouble meaning more unrecognizable colors.

If you want to pick a variety and breed it, it would be easier to start with two birds that are genetically one variety (color). And maybe a recognized variety, if you intend to show those birds in fairs or local poultry shows.

no, I would not breed her. she's missing more than she's got IMO of the laced genetics, that she'd be a backwards step for any
keep her as a colorful egg layer or find her a home as such.

Thank you for the help,I think ill sell her on im trying to keep to a strict pure breeding programme, its a shame because she is beautiful I was really hoping she was a pure colour..but hey its a learning curve...

Considering you are in Europe, where the gene pool is much richer in poultry, I'd disagree and advse if you want to breed her and try to establish the pattern, go ahead. Outside the US the "rules" for showing are different than in the US and therefore, new colors are being developed all the time.

If you want to try, I might suggest posting her to the the-coop,org genetics section and gathering some of their thoughts on her genetics. That board has a wealth of genetics experience and would be a good place to start.

FYI the-coop is hosted here in the US but has a solid world-wide membership including the authors/researchers of several genetics efforts include Henk who wrote/maintains the chicken calculator(s).

Ahh thank you for the bit of hope I just sat out there with her and thought.. ill keep you even if you just look pretty :) I was thinking of breeding her to a buff roo and see if I could make a buff baby with her pattern....just a thought I dont know if that will genetically work though...or breeding her back to a gold laced and see what happens...

Hi again,I thought as you guys were in a helpful mood id push my luck and ask your opinion..I have 2 milli fluer 8-9 week old pullets but im wondering if one may be a roo Exhibit A is what I think could be a roo and Exhibit B is the pullet please let me know what you think many thanks xx

they do have a wealth of knowledge but I believe this pattern is built on a base of heterozygous genes, and will never breed true.

Go ahead though, look at all that has been accomplished. Choc (grant brereton)from the coop has a wonderful book on genetics out, and has created some great new colours.

Your choice, you can be bold and create, or you can try and breed to the standard ;)

I don't think you can use this pullet in a standard program, but maybe you can create something new :)
