Cochin Thread!!!

I'm new to the chicken world but my chickens don't put them selves to bed they are 11 and 7 weeks old. When we first put them outside we kept them in there house for two days as we where told to do this that it would teach them to come back home at night. They did for awhile but all the sudden they stopped even at dark they stay outside

.Do you know why or how I can get them to go to bed on there own. Thanks

when you first started putting them to bed, was there a light in there? even a heat lamp? I brood all my babies with heat emitters (ceramic heating element that screws into a light socket). that way they have a normal day/night...

when they first go outside, they don't realize that dark comes gradually, unlike in the house where their light is on a timer. so for the first few days I have to put them all to bed and close the door... usually after a few days of bed in the dark they figure out when it's time to go in.

you might also try putting dinner in there just before dark and shutting the door. in case they're afraid of it for some reason...

I have been having fun filming my blue mottled and mottled bantam cochin chicks lately and made a couple video clips. Six of the chicks are around 8-weeks and two of them are around 7-weeks old. They have such great personalities and I am loving watching them grow out.

I am enjoying my bantam cochin chicks so very much. They are 9 days old today and just as cute and active as they can be! I ordered 25, got 29 and I have only lost one.

I have noticed that the black barred seem to have the most problem with their vents getting clogged. And the one that I lost was a barred. This just seemed strange to me. The whites and buffs have not had one single issue with blocked vents. Is this a common problem?

Also, I have read that you can find out their sex by feathers? I am so suprised by the rapid feather development in my little crew! Is it true that the hens will develop their feathers in mass quantities first?

I am so excited to be here! I have to get some of my pictures uploaded here so that I can show my babies off!

As for getting the birds inside at night. . .

When I first put new birds out in their pens, I have a few of the cheap solar yard lights where the solar cell is wired to the lights (they usually come with three lights to one panel. I put one light in the coop and the panel outside. That way when darkness comes along the coop is lighted a bit. This seems to get them to go in. After the get the routine down I'll unplug the light every few days until I remove it completely.

I use both ramps and steps at their pop doors. Cochins it seem prefer to hop the steps in while the egg layer coop prefer the ramps. It maybe thata the pop door is too high for them to figure out how to get in? Usually the light, steps, and ramp choice works for me.

I also have one group that gets in fairly early. More than once I've searched for them outside when in fact they've gone to bed early !

Those are some lovely chicks!

I enjoyed the videos, thanks for sharing!

We lost one of our little black cochins last night :( I went out to double check, like I do every night, that all were safe and sound and when I counted heads, there was one not peeping at the door for attention. I went in the pen to check and found little Penguin dead. No marks, no wounds, nothing I can see that caused it. Penguin was my son's chicken, poor kiddo :( We're all sad about it, but at least we have the other 10 still going strong out there!

Hiya, could I have a bit of help? Ive been looking online but cant seem to find the answer, today I bought a milli fluer hen shes gorg,I want to breed from her,do I need another milli fluer roo or are you meant to breed them to another colour? Shes brown and white, many thanks
If you really want Mille Fleur, you must breed to a MF, that is IF she is a MF. More than likely she is not. The true MF is very rare in Cochins and most of what is sold as MF are the so called Calicos, which is a non-variety. You might was well breed them to anything you want to get any look that you want.

Catch'em and put them up. If there is a roost in the pen, take it out. They will use that rather than go inside. Maybe give them a roost in their coop.
