Cochin Thread!!!

Hi im asking for your opinions on my lavender pekin pullet she is approx 14-16weeks old,shes fine and healthy but im sure there is something not quite right about her tail feathers its like they look like when you rub a feather backwards,please share your thoughts.

We lost one of our little black cochins last night I went out to double check, like I do every night, that all were safe and sound and when I counted heads, there was one not peeping at the door for attention. I went in the pen to check and found little Penguin dead. No marks, no wounds, nothing I can see that caused it.  Penguin was my son's chicken, poor kiddo We're all sad about it, but at least we have the other 10 still going strong out there!

shame. That is always terrible news. Hope the others stay strong.

There is a lot of thought here that there is a link between the lavender gene and feather problems. A lot of breeders say it can be selected out.

I wouldn't judge her too harshly yet. Not until first molt. I have seen some amazing transformations in my black birds. Also had a white hen who's comb went from being flopped over to straight up after her first true molt. And a black hen with similar tail feathers had a significant improvement in her cushion after her first molt.

Only one of my chicks (12 weeks old) would put herself to bed up until last weekend, when we finally took the time to use treats to coax the girls up the ladder and into the coop. A couple dry runs of that during the daytime, and the girls lost their fear of the ladder. They will do almost anything for mealworms.

All go up just fine now, and come down when they're ready in the morning (darn lazy chickens sleep later than WE do), so we no longer chase them around the yard each night trying to get them to bed. You know, they usually are only ready to roost well after sunset - maybe you're putting em to bed too soon? Also, I hear that using a light on a timer in there can help so they can see where they're going a bit better.

My girls tricked me yesterday evening. I got home from work, changed clothes and was ready to hang out with them and do a little coop and run housekeeping...
...aaand of course they decided it was just the night to go to bed early. Maybe it was their poker night or bridge night or something, I don't know.

SIGH. There's always the weekend, I guess!

Ahh ok thank you for the glimpse of hope,the roos feathers are fine so far its just hers, I thought maybe she was abit frizzled
