No the big boys are not birchens. They carry the silver gene as do the birchen cochins which is why i thought your bird was cool looking because with the lacing on your bird he reminded me of a miniature version of the big Silver Sussex. I was trying to compliment your bird --Mmmmm.... Those are Birchens. He is only 4 1/2 so he has his juvenile feathers.

"pure black line" really doesn't mean much. it just means that all the birds are dominant blacks... there can still be a wide variety of other mutations hanging out under that black that will show up when crossed... like red for one. the only things you can guarantee a solid black to NOT carry are mottled and barring.
