Ow poor girlwill hopefully she will get back to her normal self
I have a question its kind of gross but my new Cochin's I just got this week keeps eating there droppings ever since i first got them. They eat the chicken food and a lot of it but when i try to give them greens and green beans and blueberries and bread or bell peppers or cucumber etc they don't want to eat that really they turn right around and eat the droppings. Which none of are other chickens do I don't know why they are doing this or how to get them to stop.Does anyone know why they are doing this or how to stop it.

PS: I don't give them all of that at once they may get one thing and another day they may get something else.

give them meat! scrambled eggs, raw chicken livers cut up, (gizzards and hearts too work) ground hamburger, vary it up and give them some every other day or so, you'll see a big difference in them i'm sure.
I just got a flat of turkey necks on 'rotten meat' special (aka dated tomorrow) and tossed them into the yard and pens... it was a feeding frenzy. the dog eats them too but he'd already had his dinner - a whole chicken quarter. (raw poultry bones are ok for dogs as they're 100% digestible. cooked bones splinter and are not safe).
think about it in just a 'form' type way... most birds with bare facial skin are scavengers, meat or carrion eaters... soiled feathers on a face are haven for parasites and skin problems. so evolution helped by removing those feathers so that form and function work together. bare skin is easier to keep clean. even macaws (a type of parrot) have been known to kill small animals for their meals and partake of anything else they find available... my own macaw loves turkey leg and thigh bones, cracking them in half for the marrow.
chickens are no different. they NEED animal proteins in their diet to be 100%. that includes bugs and anything else they can get hold of. greens and grains are a portion of their diet but not the basis of it.
They do not do BYC. Both have FB accountsdo they have a byc account? or facebk
If I really wanted to add protein to a birds diet I would throw out some dry cat food as scratch. High protein so a little goes a long way. My birds love it.sounds like they arent getting enouvh protein try switching to a higher protein food and feed black oil sun floeer seeds good luck
Isn't there something you can do to protect her better? I can understand being jumped once, and it's VERY lucky she lived through that, but attacked a second time makes me wonder about her environment. Sounds like there needs to be better separation from the dogs, maybe just make a nice run for her and let her stay in there if you can't contain the dogs better.
I let her free range a lot so she doesn't stay all cooped up. But I've got her in my new breeding pens now. So she all safe now.
They weren't my dogs btw. My neighbors weren't paying attention and their dog got out from under them and ran into our yard and attacked her.
