Cochin Thread!!!

wow, that's great craig! I love hearing stories from kids who got birds like that and how they did with them. I miss being part of 4H when I was in college, helping kids out with their rabbits and poultry, but I never have enough time to do the stuff I want, let alone anything else it seems now. LOL

also no more rabbits. bunny comes home, it goes in the freezer. LOL same for goats and anything else non-chicken that comes home from a swap. LOL

i have been in 4H for a few years now but have only recently started showing animals due to a not so helpful leader... my sister does the rabbits i do the chickens lol. i would love to show a heifer one year but we only have beef cattle and by far are not pedigree quality and i am not able to train them everyday due to my parents being divorced and having to go back and forth around here the 4h competition is in cattle and goats and i love competition

actually, doing some research, buff is wheaten base, plus Db, Columbian, mahogany and dilute.

I was doing research to find what makes black tailed red. basically the same, but without Columbian and dilute. Columbian removes the black pigment from the hackles and tail, when Db is present. removing Columbian allows the black pigment on the tail, and minimal hackle markings, that can be lessened by selective breeding.

Genetically you are correct. I agree with Gail that a true Wheaten is extremely rare to none existent in the USA at this time. Last one I saw was at the 1st crossroads show I went to with my daughter in maybe 2006. There was 1 exhibited out of over 10,000 birds. Craig Carrol showed it. Have not seen one since.
