Cochin Thread!!!

Greetings from Portland, OR. Today we adopted 3 Barred Cochins off a local Facebook group. Converted a 6x8 Costco plastic shed into a henhouse. This is the first time that my family has had chickens. The kids were all very excited as was my wife. I plan on enclosing the side of my house and cutting a hatch on the side of the shed. That way they can go in and out during the day but can be locked in at night.

They are definitely Dominique's.

Thanks guys. I called 3 avian vets and they all said the only relatively safe thing to use on day olds is DE. So the babies got some on their backs, vent area, and under wings. Brooder was bleached and new bedding. Vet said to re-apply in a week. I let Lavender my cochin momma dust bathe in just sand and put some DE on her back only, and treated the week olds the same as the the kids inside. Brooder cleaned and new bedding for them also. It's raining so I will treat the large fowl coop tomorrow with poultry dust. The silkies aren't scratching right now, so I will wait to treat their coop when all the chicks have hatched. There are still a few working their way out under momma silkie, so no dusting in there. I really hope this works. I don't think it's an infestation yet, I haven't seen eggs, just bugs. Three different vets can't be wrong right? lol

I agree they definitely are not Cochin's and they are not barred rocks either barred rocks have single comb's. Here is one of my barred girls so you can see what I'm talking about. I through one in with a Cochin in the back ground to try and keep to the rules.

If think you have Dominique's.

Here are the primaries on my new mottled chick.

Anyone seen this on a mottled? I haven't seen full white feathers there before.

honestly the birds here are a genetic mystery. Everything I have test bred carries mottling. I haven't seen pure white flight feathers though.

That's just what the chicks look like at the beginning. They'll molt that.

Andy, are they Blue? I know that Blues have white tips, solid white primaries, white on their foot feathering, etc., and it all molts out. So maybe if they're Blue that could be the reason.
