Cochin Thread!!!

You know it's cold outside when you have to pour hot water on the door to the run just to get in.Then you go to let the chickens out for a little bit so they can at least have a few minutes outside today and some don't even come outside and the rest come out walk around little and turn right back around and go back inside.

My cochins hate snow. They walk up to the door and stare at all the silly white stuff. They refuse to come outside all winter long. Once I placed a hen in the middle of some snow just to see what would happen. She freaked and acted like it was hot coals as she ran straight to the barn.

Ducks and Geese are another story. It can be a blizzard out and they'd still prefer to play outside in the snow.

Hello all, I am wondering some things from those of you who have had Cochins for a while and maybe have different breeds besides Cochins.
1. Do you find the Cochins to be lowest in the pecking order?
2. Do they stop laying during the winter months all together when artificial daylight is not provided?

That's about it, a little back story for the questions. We picked up our 4 girls a little over a week ago and no one has laid anything. I am pretty sure this is a result of there being free range chickens at the farm we got them from. The man had nearly every type bird known to man and lots of other livestock. The white cochin seems to be lowest in the group and I am wondering if it's because she is so different in color to the other 3. The black cochin doesn't peck her, but the 2 BR's will let her know if she gets in their way or makes any noise they don't like. Nothing has been extreme, just have noticed them doing it to her and not the black one. Thanks for your time.

When ever I get a new hen she quits laying for a couple of weeks till she gets used to her new home. None of my hens are laying right now, all on vacay till it gets warmer.

I found pecking order takes time. Sometimes the lowest on the order in the beginning becomes the leader. They are like dogs, the more you interrupt their conversations the longer it takes for them to finish their sentence, and they will finish them.!!!!
