Cochin Thread!!!

Quote: mine are all over the place in pecking order among a number of breeds. Dorkings, bantam Cochins, LF and bantam BLRW, Easter Eggers and Swedish Flower Hens... nearly all chosen for their personality as well as appearance and utility. the EE's are probably the most random. LOL my EE roo is not aggressive, but also not overly out going. the girls will climb you for a snack in your hands. among themselves, the Dorkings are usually top, but only because they also outweigh everyone else. LOL someone tries to cop an attitude, they usually just get ignored.

happy turkeyday everyone!

I love Snoodle. Aren't they just sweethearts? My only Cochin acts exactly like yours and it's for that reason that I love her so much. Looks like you got a good one too.
Thank you! =)
Yes, they are sweethearts! I'd like a roo, but IDK where to get one. Also, I just started keeping chickens at all this year and ended up with Snoodle quite unexpectedly. But once I get things figured out a bit better about keeping chickens in general, then I'll start working on being able to breed her specifically to a Bantam Cochin roo (hopefully frizzled too, but we'll see). Maybe I'll check the feed store next spring where I got her from this spring. We'll see. IDK if I can get DH to buy me one on purpose. lol

Hello all, I am wondering some things from those of you who have had Cochins for a while and maybe have different breeds besides Cochins.
1. Do you find the Cochins to be lowest in the pecking order?
2. Do they stop laying during the winter months all together when artificial daylight is not provided?

That's about it, a little back story for the questions. We picked up our 4 girls a little over a week ago and no one has laid anything. I am pretty sure this is a result of there being free range chickens at the farm we got them from. The man had nearly every type bird known to man and lots of other livestock. The white cochin seems to be lowest in the group and I am wondering if it's because she is so different in color to the other 3. The black cochin doesn't peck her, but the 2 BR's will let her know if she gets in their way or makes any noise they don't like. Nothing has been extreme, just have noticed them doing it to her and not the black one. Thanks for your time.

1. My Cochin is a Bantam Frizzle and the other chickens sometimes treat her like she's lucky they pretend she's a chicken too and sometimes like she needs extra looking after. They don't leave her alone and there's either a Leghorn and a Comet with her or my Jersey is. She seems to be on the bottom of the pecking order, but they also take care of her, so...

2. I don't really know. I just started keeping chickens at all this spring.
I've had to make some major changes with my chickens and my Cochin hasn't laid at all yet, so.... IDK; it might be the weather, it might be something else. Sorry.

Yes, that kind of upheaval in their lives can stop and/or slow down their laying.
