Handsome boys! And I love the Blue hen in the picture with Black Jack. She is stunning!

I've set up two pens of LF breeders as of last week
1) big Black cock over 6 Blue and Splash girls. Two are seasoned hens and 4 are 11 month old just laying pullets. They are laying up a storm. The pullet eggs are still too small to hatch, but they stick to the cock bird like glue. They apparently like their arrangement.

2) my Big Blue cock over 4 Black girls. Three have been laying for about three weeks and their eggs are now an acceptable size for hatching. Then the one that hasn't laid has decided to go broody and the three stopped laying until today. Guess the move didn't agree with them.

I was going to set up a third pen, but the cock bird started sneezing. So he is in quarantine until that clears up. I gave him Tylan50 shots for three days and now I'm putting Gallimycin in his water and he is on a special diet. He is much improved but may not breed him until March.

Hello All Cochin Breeders,

I have a question about the broodiness of Bantam Vs Lg Fowl Cochins.  I have always had Bantam Cochins and have used them quite successfully to help me to hatch out my peafowl eggs.  The only problem has always been that I cannot put more than 2 eggs under each broody.  Sometimes I will allow 3 eggs if that particular cochin is a little larger than their smaller counterparts.  I was seriously considering purchasing Lg Fowl Cochins to help me with this dilemma.  Does anyone or has anyone ever noticed a difference in the girls broodiness?  Would appreciate any replies.  Thank you in advance for your time.

I have 1 LF cochin hen here in my coop as a incubator. I raise bantam cochins and soon silkies and use my broodies to do the job. I got "big momma hen" as I can stick a doz+ under her. She hasn't gone broody for me yet but this was her job at her previous home and was awesome at it. So yes I would say she would go broody a lot also

Update on my Chocolate Bantam Cochin project!
I have 4 babies from my Otis pen (chocolate bantam Orp over black bantam Cochin pullets - my Jamie Matts cockerel and roo from Sue Tillman are these black girls' dads). I also have 2 chicks from my Tom pen (father is a black bantam Cochin from Tom Roebuck and the mothers are bantam chocolate Orps I bred and raised from my original quint). I can't tell what color the chicks are from Tom's pen - they are still in the suet holder and the other chicks in the hatching tray seem very attracted to it. I do have 2 black cockerels and including the pullet hatched last week, I have 2 chocolate pullets from Otis' pen. I have a couple that have some decent middle toe feathering this time!

I swear, as soon as I get time, I will get pics!

Im glade to hear the chocolates are working.

Thats my goal to start working on with chocolate mottleds, solids, splash, and calicos This spring. Also gonna breed my orphingtons to each other to get more since I only have 4. 1 roo and 3 hens.

Im redoing my barj and making new pens and adding breeding pens. Im also thinking of adding a few frizzles and sizzles to my flock. Lots of stuff I want to ro and so lil time! Lol

i have a question for cochin owners.

i'm thinking about ordering a couple of blue cochins because they seem to be such sweet and cute little birds!

although, i am concerned about one thing. i live in southwestern washington, and we get rain. lots of it. any washington/oregon user here(depending on the area they live in) get what i'm saying. i'm worried that the mud will just completely ruin their feet feathers entirely. what do you guys do if/when your cochin's feet get dirty?

like this? LOL

unless you're planning on showing, I wouldn't worry about it. here in sw Virginia, we have red clay. LOTS of it. and when it rains, it turns into the gooeyest mud you've ever seen.
