Cochin Thread!!!

Awesome! I wondered about Mille Fleur too. I don't know much about them. I have cochins now, but not laced.

I doubt you'd get a mille fleur from the feed store unless they're from a local breeder, since it's not a recognized variety, most hatcheries haven't added it.

ETA Amy and Craig both stated it very well.

I fall somewhere inbetween I think... I'm working to improve the type on the birds I have, but the color isn't right... but they're about as close as the majority of the cochins I've seen... someday when the other various projects are established and underway, I might add another to make a 'correct' mille fleur bantam cochin, but until then, I'm just enjoying these guys for what they are.

Hey everyone, I just got my first cochins a week ago. They are too old of chick starter and I read that crumbles are better for bantams than pellets plus mine are still little. However, they go through so much food every day. I have the feeder up of the ground, but so much food gets tossed its crazy. Its like the coop floor is more food then pine shavings. Is there a trick to get them to stop wasting, or do I stop filling the feeder up so much..? I read some people with mix with water to become more of a mash, does that work? Im just tired of wasting food! :)

I feed fermented feed, but even just soaking their feed with some hot water to get it to clump will help minimize feed loss... my babies are all started on fermented feed and I keep a piece of hardware cloth over the top of the shallow bowl (1x1) so they can't get in and shovel it out with their feet...

if you do something like this up off the ground and put a guard over the pan that has holes just big enough the chickens can get in and eat but not throw food every place, I believe I saw them in the waters and feeders section here on BYC. hope this helps.

Hey guys! Can anyone tell me the faults of my duo of buff bantam cochins? Are they a good breeding pair? The pullet has not yet reached point of lay.

In November or so I will be (hopefully) moving to a house with a bit of land, enough to build my coops again. I want to get back into chickens, and I loved my cochins so much! I want to find some good show quality birds. I want only large fowl. I am going to be studying up on lines and such, if anyone can direct me to a good resource. If you know of a reputable LF SQ cochin breeder, please let me know, so I can get in touch. I am interested in breeding several colors. Also please direct me to where I could get more info on shows and who is winning them :) Thanks, y'all!

All of my birds (including the bantam cochins) eat pellets and I've never had a problem.

My cochins (both LF and bantam) prefer the pellets over the crumbles.

I went out this morning to feed my babies, in the rain, and two escaped their coop and are playing while the others sit nice and dry inside.. silly birds. They are staying under the coop but will walk out flap their wings then run back under.
