Cochin Thread!!!

I have been talking non-stop about getting more cochins and my wonderful husband took me on a surprise drive today (I rode an hour and a half with a blindfold on talk about freaking lol) and when we got to our destination I had 2 whites, 2 blues, and 2 black mottled babies waiting for me! It was such an awesome surprise but apparently it didn't end there I have a red cockerel and a blue splash pullet to pick up tomorrow so I can start working on my lemon blue project!!!!

Wickedhens congrats on your new babies!! I need a second coop before I or my hubby can gift us with more. So next year!!! Must have more chickens!!!

Oh yeah 3 mini cabin coops would be great for me but one would have to be in front of my cabin. lololol! I will have to add more to my run and just build the one large cabin coop with the space we have. our yard is shaped oddly.

Congratulations on your new babies, sounds like you have a very loving husband. My only question is what you plan to use for your lemon-blue program? Do you already have Brown Reds? They are a requirement to breed Lemon Blue which is already an accepted color although not a common one.

The lady I am getting the cockerel from today is a brown red, I am confused though all I have red about lemon blues said they are not recognized, maybe I am reading older material? I don't look to show my daughter is very into genetics and I don't know much but thankfully we have a 4h leader who is :D

Lemon Blue is not recognized by the APA but is by the ABA. There are currently a couple of folks that are working on Brown Red large fowl and one that I know of that is producing some for sale. If you want a particular variety of Cochin, my recommendation would be to look on the Cochins International site for breeders of the variety you are wanting. There is also a Facebook page, but they don't have a breeders list.

Hi, does anyone else have a cochin that can't get the hang of the roost? My buff cochin (surprise chick from MM), is the most awkward looking boy (or girl, I still haven't figured out which yet) when he tries to roost. I went to count my boys and girls last night before I locked the coop and counted and found I was one short. I noticed my Cochin in the corner of the coop. I think maybe he's given up on getting on the roost at all. We'll see when I go out there tonight.

I have some that are 2 years old LF and still sleep on the floor. ...... 2 years old and they still don't get it. They also sleep in the corner. I gave up if they want to sleep on the floor, fine by me lol

I have some that roost and some that prefer to pick a corner on the floor. No idea why.
