Cochin Thread!!!

So, does it create a problem for Cochin, Salmon Favorolle and Silkies to have muddy spots in the run?

My biggest concern with feather legs being in muddy conditions is b/c winters her can be very very wet and cold and I don't want there feet/legs to freeze b/c there feathers on there Feet/legs get and stay wet, and or break off.
I am also new to Cochins and just want to keep them clean and happy. I quess I'm treating them like a brand new car. Lol! I have never heard of any serious health issues do to feather feet/legs being in mud. The only one I have heard is that the mudd can harden up and pull on the feathers kinda like a mat in a dogs fur can pull and irratate the skin. Buts that's only in really bad mud and if the chicken doesn't groom him/her self very well.

I live in the mittin of Michigan so winters are wet cold and nasty here too. With my numbers being large. There is a lot of birds in a small area when in run and coop. I found that if I use shavings in coop. Everyone is super clean vrs straw. In the run of course there's no grass but I did toss down a very light layer of sand. It def helps with mud. Spring is hard to avoid as mud is gonna happen. Again I live on clay and my 12 acres is very wet into June. I have not seen any issues to mud. No bumble foot or loose of toes or feather damage and sensitivity. I have 15 silkies 1 millie 80+ Cochin's and frizzles and 1 fravorlli. I've been very happy with how clean they keep themselves and how clean their legs and feet's are. Even during winter and spring. I will get a pic in a lil bit to show ya my run so ya can see my set up.
When I was 1st new to this breed I too was worried. Now not at all. Just hawks are my biggest issue.

Also Amanda (funnyefarm) lives about 15 min north of me and she has both LF and bantam Cochin's and silkies and Millie's and too has no issues with feet issues. Her barn is sandy and dry (her birds roam to big beautiful barn) and her ground all around the barn is clay too. She has no issues. :)

Is there a member of this thread from Georgia working on LF Mottled Cochins? Last year I purchased some Blue Cochin hatching eggs from an NPIP certified keeper in GA, and I have a mottled hen and black male I've got paired up now, just wondered if the breeder was here.

Thanks :)

Thanks guys! I love my lil birds. I have about 50 of the millie colored cochins as its my fav color.

I counted all my birds and have 101 total! LOL! Im not addicted, not at all!

oh and yep all have names!

Disregard my query, seller just informed me he no longer has the birds. I don't consider these great type birds so once I get some chicks on the ground I will be looking to improve that. I am mainly unfamiliar with mottled genetics, so would welcome any and all advice from those more experienced with them. Would also really love to find some nice LF Blues one of these days.
