Cochin Thread!!!

In my opinion I'd start with blue. With blue u can get, blues, blacks, and splashes, my fav!

My thoughts too!. I certainly will keep that in mind!

are you looking to show as well? the best varieties out there would be black, white and mottled. but I prefer the more challenging varieties that need work, like the silver laced and red...
I might be showing, but I don't quite know yet. I'm showing rabbits right now, so having to drive far to get to more than rabbit shows is probably out of the question, but I might show at local fairs. Is there any way to get good quality from a hatchery?

Not show quality. Some folks have HAD to use hatchery birds when starting a rare breed because there was no other place to begin, but I don't recommend this direction.

But, could you use the hatchery birds AS PART of a breeding program?. Like, get mostly hatchery birds and then find a breeder and get one that you could use to push out the bad qualities?

some hatcheries sometimes have show quality birds that they will sell, but can be quite costly.

Hi, I want to get into breeding Cochins. What colors should I start with?. I don't have any yet, but I want to soon.

If you want to show or learn breeding I suggest Blacks first. They are they easiest to get birds of quality in and the Blacks can be used in improvement projects down the road in some of the other varieties. As Karen commented White and Mottleds are nalso gootd places to start. I am a relatively experienced breeder and have trouble breeding patterns to Show Quality levels. . Find a mentor that you trust.. Always consider the source since there is some very bad advice given from time to time. Easier and better to get birds from a breeder than a hatchery and from now until fall is the best time to find next years breeding stock. Most of us don't carry many extras over the winter. I assumed you were talking Bantams but if you want Large Fowl I suggest Blacks then Buff. Many more varieties of Bantams than Large.

Good Luck

Thank you for your advice!

I put 13 Cochin eggs in the bator Tuesday, Gold Lace, Blue, Black & Splash. I've never had a Cochin, what can I expect? At what age and how often do they lay? Are they ok in a coop with a run vs' free range? Are they friendly? Loud? Heat hearty? Cold hearty? Any info would be great, Thanks!!
