Cochin Thread!!!

Agreed. I'm a meat and egg type. Its cool if they're "correct" to SOP, but not a deal breaker if they aren't. I am kind of interested in the blue cochin pics that have been posted, and will probably start a group of blues next spring.
Yes, the blues are very pretty...I am partial to buffs as well, but don't have any...yet

Some of the chicks i hatched out yesterday. My question is, can anyone tell me what color the cochin on the far right is going to be? I thought maybe black? The one on the left is partridge? The middle chick is a olive egger.

What are some neat tasty spoiling snacks do you feeds your Cochin's and other birds?

I'm a nut about hitting Kroger's 10 for 10 bread. I have a freezer full of bread for my birds. I also get full watermelons too. And hit the best fruit and veggie stands to load up on treats too as I don't have a garden myself. And after Halloween I load up on pumpkins.

Also any old food from fridge and cubbards.

I also make a scratch made from wild bird seed, scratch grains from purina, and wild pheasant scratch. I also have a wild game block too at all times.

How about you guys? What do you spoil ur birds with?

Suet blocks for birds store good in the freezer and birds love them. I buy them in the summer at a deep discount. I like the melons also. I don't do too much bread for birds kept in a pen but for those in the free range rotation I love it too. Apples, tomatoes, the extra pumpkins in the fall, butternut sqash also are bird favorites.

We have an apple tree and boy do my chickens Love apples. We get so many that we have them year round because we freeze and can them. They also like blackberries, we have bushes on our property, also. We save all our scraps for them also. I think it is so fun to watch my rooster and Jewel because they talk about the food and share first. We also have an overbundance of a huge flying irredecent green beetle that they all love. They are big and easy for them to catch it is fun to watch them chase them.

You know nothing about me.

I would like to list my credentials but you would view that as bragging.  If I say nothing I can't take the BS you dish out.

Personal attacks will not go without a response.

I did not comment on any persons birds.  I did comment on the direction of this site. I made no personal attacks but sure am taking them.

My comment was this. Nothing more :

Does anyone care what a Cochin is supposed to look like? I see birds posted that I hope are never bred.  Leg color and eye color and pattern all matter.

I have a couple of Cochins that are not show breed quality and I still love them. I have just purchased one that is from show lines because I wanted one. I am planning on getting more to keep my little one company. I am very interested in learning more about them.

That being said, I'm going to rock the boat. As much as I love all the pretty colors and different types of "eye candy" chickens, I think people have forgotten about the breed. I have just purchased some sultans because they are now listed as rare. It seems all anyone wants to do is cross with this kind and cross with that kind. We will eventually lose the beauty of our birds because people want something unusual. This is no different than over breeding dogs or cats or any other animal. I'm tired of all the rainbow birds and think we are going too far away from the original.

I also take French's yellow mustard and put a big splat in the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket and fill with water. Pore it on the lawn where I think the most worms are. Within minutes the worms come racing out of the ground and I collect them as treats too.
Bleach water works too to get worms out of ground immediately.

Okay, I bet my gals and guy would love some worms for treats, so I will try this trick! I was
kind of laughing after I read it, thinking about how in the world someone ever came up with this idea,
but if it works hey, I'm game LOL. Thanks for sharing.
