Cochin Thread!!!

Dumb question from a Newbie. I'd like to breed Gold Laced Cochin bantams. Do I need a GL rooster and a GL hen to get GL chicks???
Not dumb at all greyphase, considering how many discussions there are on breeding "this to that." The answer is yes. They are a recovering variety that nearly went extinct. There are a few breeders that are working on them, trying to restore them to their former status. You can find them at most hatcheries, but I would shop very carefully. What is available are anywhere from OK to nice, but many are horrible and barely resemble a Golden Lace let alone a Cochin.
You can look on the Cochins International web site and I believe you will find some of the breeders of GL

Thanks lilcrow. Don't suppose that you have any opinion on which commercial hatchery may have the best birds? Will keep watch on the Cochin International website and see if any thing comes up or maybe try to find some eggs next spring.

Give him time, they mature slow. 16 months for large fowl to reach adulthood. Also they are a more mellow breed. But once the hormones kick in males will sort out who is boss. A friend has a bantam mottled that runs the coop over a LF Blue that is 3xs his size so far.

Since I haven't purchased chicks from a hatchery in years, I can only give you word of mouth information. A couple of people that I respect have ordered Cochin chicks from Webb Hatchery. I believe they are in Iowa. They have a web site, so just do a search for them and it will come up. I have considered trying them for Birchens, but I think I've passed the stage that they will be any help. Don't write of breeders as a source. If you are genuinely interested in breeding them to meet the SOP, there could be a breeder willing to take you under their wing (so to speak).

Just became a Cochin owner 5 days ago! This is sweet Penelope.
