Thanks, cause I've got someone holding five chicks for me until they're old enough to be left alone outside and they are getting impatient so I'm worried that they won't keep them for me much longer

they are going on four weeks now and our temperatures don't go below 65 at the moment, but during the day is staying around 85. Any advice? Can't really have a brooder unfortunately

i bought 15 chicks at tractor supply. they were about 4 days old and not cochins. i just kept them in my basement with a space heater until they were feathered enough that i could put them in the coop. i lost none of them. so if you have an indoor space where their cheeping won't annoy you and a space heater you can raise them inside until they are mostly feathered or fully feathered depending on the season and temprature and then put them outside. none of my chicks froze to death. on nice days before they were ready for the coop i took their cage outside and let them enjoy the sunshine. if you do that though put them in the shade. they can get heat stroke just as easy as freezing to death.

only a guess on her age but about 5-months maybe 6 at most. (brought her home end of sept and she was young but a pretty good size) Always has been timid, im sure due to the place she came from. Not mounting anyone and is not bossy in the coop- biggest but really low on the pecking order for sure! hangs out with 2 younger ee and 2 polish (all younger) I brought her home with with- dosent hang with the layers in the coop that are all about 4months older then her

(?) GIRL (?) With SUPER BIG WADDLES COMB ?? Could she be a girl still with these massive red waddles? I read a few other threads with similar questions and some turn out to be roos but some did turn out to be hens. What do you think? She has really pretty shiny black feathering thru out her entire body, no extra shiny tail feathers. She is HUGE, but that is the breed of course. I am sure she is not the best quality but I needed to remove her from her horrible home. Her name is Black Betty and I rescued her from a horrible place/breeder where the "rats" took the to blue cochin I went to pick up when they were about 8 weeks old. Betty was the only one in the coop when we went in so she is ours always, but really would love a "little" pullet thanks

I'm going to be the doubter, at 5-6 months that looks more like a rooster to me.

No rooster tail. Pullet.

These are bantam cochins at about 5-6 months, rooster in front, then in back for comparison.

I think Laura has a pullet too. The comb looks like my two pullets where Stumpy's comb is much larger and longer.

Hi LauraOo, noticed you were from Chicago too as I was looking at your pics. I do not have any LF cochin, just some bantam cochins and other LF. But that chicken looks like it has some long legs, I always look at comb/waddles, feet and leg size and body shape. To me I would say that is a roo. Good luck and hope I am wrong from the South side of Chicago.
