I would wait to get a few more and actually check if they're fertile. Also do you mean the first egg ever if so I would wait at least a month to let the eggs become properly sized

I've heard people say that, and others that do first eggs, with no problems. The project chick has been laying since Christmas, so I set her most recent 10 eggs, cracked open her first 2, and they were fertile.
I candled all the eggs and don't see any double yolks and shell quality looks good. Size is decent in my mind, so i already added them. If they develop, fine. If not, that's ok too.

Eta - yes the other cochin egg is her first. I also got a first from one of my seramas today, and added it to the bator too. It's full now. :yiipchick

I'm a candling addict

I will take a peek tonight, and almost every evening, usually just shine on them in place. Full candles on days 7, 14 and 18, and I usually mark air cells.

So we have four with development, two are questionable. The two look clear at this point but we will wait and see.

Day 7 candle, 8 of 12 shipped eggs looking great! Pulled the other 4, no development. Not bad after a trip from California to West Virginia!

My flock eggs, all 13 appear fertile and growing. My bearded girls eggs are very dark, so there could be some clears, but I'm pretty sure I saw veining in them all!

I just did my 7 day candle too. Four look great. 2 clears. It's ok because I was just looking to replace 1 bird. Fingers crossed these make it and 1 is a hen!

So far we have been lucky with hens. I'd say 75 percent of the chicks we hatched last year were girls and our cackle surprise box was about 80% girls. I was amazed! As long as we get one pullet out of this hatch it will be ok.
