Cochin Thread!!!

i got a chick! this has been a stressful hatch. my hen went broody in cold weather so i put about 20 eggs under her because it was the end of winter. but the weather has been fluctuating. only three eggs belonged to her the rest belonged to my flock of mixed breeds. i figured i'd go ahead and let her try. even though i risked not getting any more eggs from her for that season if they failed. 9 eggs were left unbroken. this morning a cochin chick hatched! there is a good chance nothing else will hatch. i woke up at 9:00 this morning and the little guy was still wet. 2:00 and still no sign of hatching in the rest. Mamma will not get up so i can't post pics yet. i don't want her to up anyway. it's chilly today. the little guys Mamma is a pure blue. this is the only pic i have of her. it was taken today.

and this is the daddy, my main boy Shadow!

wish my little guy luck!

Congratz on the new addition.

Does anyone have any splash bantam eggs for sale? I am in upper East TN. Will ship if it's close. I have a blue pen that I want to add to. Thx!

Does anyone have any advice on how to manage a very aggressive Cochin?

She's one year old this month. Bought her with another Cochin and 4 Buff Orpingtons and raised them together. Then introduced them to my three adult hens. All that went very well. The Cochins were clearly the bottom of the pecking order but no one really bothered them.

Well, about 4 months ago, the aggressive Cochin figured out she's got a beak and isn't afraid to use it. She's VERY aggressive about food. She wants treats all the time. And if I don't offer her something, she'll just start biting me. This morning, I gave one BO her medicine in a raisin. No one else got a treat. The Cochin bit me on the wrist and really nailed me good. She actually broke the skin and drew blood.

I won't get rid of her. She's part of the flock. But I won't let anyone else near her. When we have kids come over, I tell everyone, stay away from the brown one because she bites.

Is this just her personality and I need to accept it?

Wow, that's unfortunate. I've never had a hen be that aggressive. I had one that was clearing top of the pecking order with the other girls, but was a sweetheart with me. Have you searched for threads about aggressive hens in general (not just cochins)? I know there are tons of info on aggressive roosters, maybe some of the tactics used on males would work on females? (carrying them around, pen to the ground, time-out separation, etc)

Yea, I'll carry her around or sit with her in my lap and calmly stroke her and talk to her. She loves it. She really is a sweet bird and I don't think she means to bite. She's just very aggressive about food and knows that treats come in my hands so she's always pecking at my fingers.

I don't think there really is anything that can be done. I find that my birds mellow out from their high strung teenage phase after their first molt so maybe I just chill till this fall and see if that doesn't get her to chill out a bit.

I do have a couple that I can't let eat out of my hand because they peck too hard... lol! Has she been broody yet? I also find that mellows them a bit, after the chicks are raised.
