Here are 2 of the 4 (or 5) I bought. I chose them because they looked different than all the rest. They were in a pen of blues. What can you tell me? I know nothing at all about cochins!

Filligree is a fancy wire pattern, popular in victorian times, that formed the composition of much jewelry of the time. It's not a chicken feather term, yet.

I bought this cochin because I liked her curly feathers. I bought 4 (or is it 5?), and this is the only one like this. How does that happen, anyway? This is the first time I have had a cochin. Another question ... do they make funny noises? I have one that doesn't really sound like a chicken, but makes a funny noise. Do they all do that?

Sometimes with age the feathers will look like that, many times after a full body moult when the new feathers come in they will look normal. Cochins are no different then any other chicken when it comes to the noises they make. Many times before they lay an egg they will make some interesting noises or after they lay. If it sounds a raspy sound or sneezing their may be something else going as in health issues.

No, there is no raspy sound or sneezing. I just think they sound different than my other chickens. Less vocal, less talkative, not as loud.

So, you have seen this before?

I don't think this girl has molted. I believe she is young, in her first year. I emailed the breeder and he said:

"I have no idea. It must be a mutation of some sort. As you said I do not have anything like silkies or other breeds on the property that could have produced that. I only culled her because she was a blue splash and I try to keep all my layers as blues."

I just think she is beautiful, and I will breed her (if she ever lays any eggs!) ...

Yes, in older cochins, once they moult the new feathers come in like normal feathers. It's really hard to say for sure what the issue is if any. I would just wait and see what happens after her first moult. I guess it could be some sort of mutation, I'm not one for genetics, just speaking from experience with cochins.

She is a pretty bird, and if your happy then that's all that counts!!

Take care,
Shari
