Cochin Thread!!!

Adorable babies, Gail. Congratulations!

The girls supposedly have two rows of primary feathers the first couple of days where the boys only have one.
I can't wait 'till you start getting BLR COCHINS!!!

Laurie, what do you do with extra hens and pullets? Do you have a special arrangement for them? Doesn't sound like they free range with the roos. Thanks

Anyone else have a different way of handling this?

I tried the feather-sexing with the Mille Fleurs, and was 100% positive that the first 2 were girls. I was 100% wrong!!! So I quit trying to feather-sex!

Anyway, here's the first 8 of the first generation BLR's (GL roo x Splash hen). They range in age from 3 days to 18 days.

Sorry about the feather sexing - I wasn't clear. Aren't Golden Laced sex-linked (i.e. you can tell the sex by the color of the chicks)?

Lavender Mottled Cochin Bantam Project Eggs For Sale!

The F1's of my mottled lavender project are laying like crazy and i am offering a total of 12 eggs, some from their pen and some eggs from my SQ white pen. The parents of the eggs you are getting are split for mottled and lavender, so you will get some black, some lav, some mottled, and a few lav mottled. these are pullet eggs and i have not tried to hatch any myself, my bator is full, so i have no idea how hatchability is or what the acutal ratio of colors you will get, so no guarentees, only guarentee is eggs leave here intact and packed carefully. i dont have any doubts toward fertility though since there are 3 roos over 9 hens. the white eggs have had excellent fertility and hatchability ive had 100% fertility and hatchability on the whites, even with two week old eggs, and the white eggs you get will be fresh! auction starts at 25$, and ends tuesday at 4:40pm pacific time. A reserve amount is set and if it is not met the auction will be withdrawn

I have a question for you guys/gals good at cochin sexing.

I hatched out four cochins 3 weeks ago i believe and 2 of there backs have feathers while two dont. Would that mean i have 2 females and 2 males?
Here are some pictures so you can see for yourself.

looks like you may be correct, but only time will tell forsure, one thing i wanted to add, i see some nice tight wings on those whites, thats what you want, tips of wings should be tucked under the saddle feathers on a good cochin. i am assuming since you hatched these eggs these arent your everyday hatchery cochins, so my question, are these from your line or did you order the eggs? and from who did you order them if that is the case?
