Cochin Thread!!!

I like big birds. My reasoning is that you get a giant type bird with this amazing personality. It brings people in. They want to learn about it. Bantams do the same thing.

I want a fight on my hands when I wash my birds, a big bird puts up a fight better. When they calm down after realizing the bath isn't so bad, it's hilarious to watch them lay on their sides and enjoy themselves. They stand up better to the winter than bantam birds, watching them grow from an ordinary egg into a ginormous bird is amazing in itself. I take pride in getting it from the egg to the bird I know it can be and should be.

Largefowl Asiatics can cover more eggs than bantams, sure, they may take more feed but possums and such generally don't take the oversized birds. They're simply too big. I've never had my Langshan injured, but the hens don't get by so lucky. My LF Cochin hen made it unscathed, but passed on from a massive prolapse 5 years later. Excellent mother. The brow on her was amazing. I think that's another thing that makes me enjoy them more than bantams, the overlapping brow causes the skin to hang from it and cover the eyes. They can still see, but it makes them look like grumpy old biddies when in actuality, they are the sweetest birds in the pen.

I thought I'd repost this now that people are back from the holiday. Can anyone help with beak and toe color issues in chicks? Thanx!

I completely understand the "I want it now" syndrome. I've been looking for some good quality White Cochin bantams for well over a year. I'm kicking myself because last year a BYC'r had a pair that I loved and I balked at the price + shipping. Now that I'm into chicken keeping more, I understand pricing better. Live and learn. I let a great pair go due to my "I want it now" syndrome and the "You want WHAT for them" syndrome.

Good luck!

Yep, that's the kind of person I am. I want it, I want it great, and I want it NOW. LOL!!! I think "What do you mean I have to wait? You don't understand I want it yesterday!" :)

Hi, I would like to join the Cochin Thread. I have had them for close to 2 months and I LOVE them. I have 6 Banty Cochins with 3 more coming. The three that I'm getting are almost 3 months old and they are gold laced bantam hens. Here they are.

I have 2 Mottled ones like this. One hen and one rooster. So I have to sell the rooster. The hen I havn't named yet.

These are my 2 white ones. They are both roosters so I will be selling both.

This is RooRoo. He is my favorite Rooster. He lets me hold him on his back like a baby and even falls asleep like that. But I can't have roosters so I am selling him too

Breeding showbirds requires patience. Sometimes you have to look a year or two ahead. One of your birds may have one trait you need and another bird a different one. It takes time to get all the traits into a showbird. Don't expect breeder birds you buy to be instant show winners. To be succesfull you HAVE to be willing to invest the time. To me the fun is in the breeding.

How in the world have I ended up on the COCHIN thread??

-I'm a Brahma man for cryin out loud!

I do understand. I've been showing Lovebirds for 5 years now, and finally have my line going in the direction I want. I finally (after 5 years) got my first Best In Division (1st place out of 156 Lovebirds) in Denver last October, and it took a lot of work and patience (which doesn't seem to be in my DNA) to get to that point. It took several generations for me to get that winner and I feel like I'm on the right track. I say right track because show people are always looking to improve, whether it be with parrots, chickens, dogs, or whatever as I'm sure you would agree. I just want to get 'started' now LOL!

You ended up here because you secretly want Cochins! :)

I would not mind some really nice colored columbian bantam cochins. I am very fond of the columbian color. Right now though, I'm strictly working on my Brahmas! I don't think I would enjoy the AI part of the Cochin world?

It's good to see that you are familiar with the process. If you can't get some birds NOW!!

You could check out some fall shows and most likely find several breeder/exhibitors that could provide you with exactly what you want.

I had no idea you could show lovebirds. That is awesome! I don't want to steal the thread, but could you post photos or anything in the Caged Birds section?! That is too cool!

Oh trust me, it seems like no matter what someone is into, be it birds, dogs, plants, flower arrangements :) there is a group somewhere willing to judge it. Judging caged birds is a big deal in the caged bird world, there are clubs, groups, shows, sanctioned judges for each group, division, etc, and even a National show every year. It's a lot of fun! I'll post some pics tonight in the caged bird section.
