And I have a totally off topic question... Does anyone ese have trouble with eggs sticking to their fuzzy butts???
I occasionally find an egg on the floor f the coop or in the run. I watched my big blue cochin lay her egg one day to se what was going on (what is it they say about a watched pot never boiling? I was feeling it might be the same for a chicken laying...). Anyway, she laid the egg, then hopped out of the box and it dropped off her butt onto the floor! I was glad she wasn't just laying it there. The last two days, though she has had an egg stuck, ad I mean STUCK, to her feathers. Yesterday, I heard the egg song and went looking but couldn't find the egg. As she strolled by, there it was hanging from her behind. I chased her around the run (during which time I fully expected it to drop at any moment) and had to pick the feathers that were glued to the egg. Who knows how long it would've stayed there. Same thing again today.

Any suggestions???

How long does it normally take for sq black bantam cochins to lay? Mine is almost 8 months now and still no egg. I have heard that some can take up to a year to lay is this true? She doesn't look like she is molting but I guess it is possible. I pick her up at least once a day and she never loses a feather. I have searched everywhere for an egg they are free range but don't go far from the coop.

How old is your Partridge pullet? I have two that are 5 mo. old, both getting really wide across the back and nice heads but so far not much penciling at all.

She's 6 1/2 months old give or take a week.

Hmmm . . . I haven't had this problem (to my knowledge). Is she on a commercial layer feed as her diet staple? I'm thinking she may need more calcium. Are the shells normal, or are they softer than normal?

Ok, question here for all you cochin breeders. I have 14 buff cochin banties (only seven are females). They were hatched in April and already one of the little hens, who only started laying eggs two weeks ago, has gone broody on me and is amassing all of her eggs and the eggs from some of my New Hampshire girls. I have had my New Hampshires go broody before, but never with such a vengance. This little girl raises every feather on end and actually hisses at me if I get too close. She fashioned her own nest clear up in our straw bales, about five rows high. I am concerned about her and have put a waterer and dish of feed up there for her. Should I pull her down or let her go? Is this normal for such a young little girl????? My New Hampshires have never gone broody before they were about eight months old.
I would also like to find new homes for five of the little roosters - boy are they cocky!
Thanks in advance for any help!
