I think I am going to get rid of my birchen Cochin roo. I have bred him a good bit and get nice big birds from him but I didn't keep any of his daughters to go back with him and have all my other hens in with a new roo so I just don't need this guy anymore. he is now just fre ranging with some other roos and all my hens.
He is a lovely color so I don't really want to put him in the freezer either. I haven't really offered him up for sale but now just realize I won't be breeding him anymore. He has a great temperament and has never rode his hens too much. He is great with chicks and adolescents.

He is beautiful !
I wonder if you can breed for LF Cochin Birchen with bantam birds and breed them for size ?
Guess not...I have way too many other projects to do it, was just wondering.

Thanks! I think he is handsome, too. He is a real sweetie but I have so many roos running around and I hate that this color is so hard to find. He doesn't fight with any of the other roos. I am amazed.

You can. It would just take time to build up the size over a few generations.

A know of a beautiful bantam dark brahma boy who is the only roo in a field of ladies. They raise their own chicks every year

Also, with AI most definitely.

You should find someone else who wants to build up the project if you can't. It would be worth it to whoever had the time.

I posted here a couple of days ago the complete list of all recognized Cochin varieties - for both Bantam and Large Fowl. There are so many beautiful color varieties that have declining populations - most probably, I assume, because breeding for correct Type AND Plumage can be such a challenge.

So here's my 2011 Breeders' Challenge to everyone - adopt a new (to you!) Cochin Color Variety! Whether its Silver Pencilled, Lemon Blue, Brown Red, Buff Columbian or Birchen - just add ONE more variety to your flock. Heck, part of the challenge will probably be finding good stock to start with!!

If you already have one of the "endangered" varieties in your flock - your challenge may be to not give up on it.

And for everyone who doesn't have the time, space or resources to add another variety, your job may be to lend moral support, breeding experience, genetics experience, and the like to everyone else. You might even be able to help track down some starter stock for someone else.

so taking on a new variety for 2011 is not an option. I will however, help out in any other fashion. I have a Black Cochin boy from Tom presently residing with 3 ladies...a blue, a black, and a splash. And...two of them are on loan from another BYCer

A sucker for punishment I guess

Editted to add: all were properly quarantined prior to their present living conditions which just started 3 days ago. Everyone is on their best behavior.
