Not to rain on your parade, but you can't make Lemon Blues from a Blue X Buff, or Buff X Blue matings. There is no pattern gene involved with that match up. You need to start with Brown Red and Splash, or Brown Red and Blue, and the Brown Red can't be from a Buff X Black cross either. Unless you are producing no kidding laced/edged feathers in the breast feathers of the males and females, and saddle feathers in the males that are laced with color you don't have the correct genetics.

Brown Red X Splash will produce Lemon Blue, but many will be undermarked, which may not be a bad thing since most Brown Reds are over marked. Breeding the f1's back together or a lighter Blue based f1 back to a Brown Red would be the route I'd go. Lemon Blue X Lemon Blue will produce the same results as breeding Blue X Blue (that is 25% Lemon Splash, 25% Brown Red, and 50% Lemon Blue).

Well, I guess I'll try to find a Brown Red Cockerel, since I have plenty of Splash and Blue hens.

Thanks for the info!

Back to the search for quality birds ....

Joanie - Do you still belong to Cochins International? On the Spring, 2010 Master Breeder Point List, there are 11 different Brown Red breeders!

I have a nice trio of Partridge, a Mille Fleur Project, a Lavender Project, Mottles(to improve my Milles), Blacks (to improve my Lavenders) and one sweet little buff. I would love to work on Buff Columbians (don't they also help Mille type?) and I sure will keep my eye out for others.
I will be at the APA Nationals Dec.11,12 in Shawnee, Oklahoma. Hold me back!!!!!!! That is alot of chickens to admire and covet.

I dont have any birds at the time so any variety will be new for me. I plan on acquiring some quality Whites in frizzle and smooth as well as some nice Lavender/SB's to work with. I would love to find some decent Red's I can get and work on making the type better overall on that variety. Ha, just realized I would be raising Red, White, and SB Cochin Bantams . I would be patriotic.

My goal is to have very good quality frizzle and smooth birds in these three varieties. Thats my plan for the 2011 breeding year.

I am trying to limit myself to 3 varieties: 1. lemon blue/ brown red/ birchens 2. Mottled blacks and blues and 3. Black, blue, and splash.
I have a splash lemon blue roo and a young birchen pullet (I also have a hatchery birchen hen, but I think I will leave her out of the gene pool) I would really love some brown red or lemon blue eggs to move this project along, but have had no luck as of yet -- hope more are available in the Spring.
I have a group of mottled black chicks and I have one mottled blue chick from a different breeder -- all should be good quality so I have high hopes.
And I have a couple of blue and a couple of splash pullets. I have a blue cockrel, but I have a couple of black chicks that look like they will be much better.
I'm just getting started, but I hope to jump into the breeding game this spring. I've been hatching shipped eggs and I can't wait to start hatching some of my own! I'm sure I will be asking you all lots of questions, and I look forward to learning from you all.

If you can do all that in one year starting from nothing, I might offer you a job with some of mine....Good Luck!

My hubby asked last night (in a disgusted tone of voice) why there were more eggs in the incubator.

Silly question.

I got a shipment of cochin eggs from CA that I was trying to keep from hubby. Well he went into the Post Office to buy some stamps and they gave him the eggs. ROFL!!!

He came in with the box and said, "Ummm did you forget about something?" "Oh those? Yea, I guess I did!"

I've had the same 20 eggs in the incubator for 3 months. LMAO!!!!!

I am sooooo excited!

I have been posting for LF Cochin hens.....looking on Craigslist and even calling in on our local Dial a Trade looking for some girls for my Cochin Rooster!

Finally today I have found four for Harry!! He has been so pitiful looking and lonely since I took him out of the flock and put him by himself.....for his own safetly....top rooster beat him up when he decided he might like a hen for himself.

My Cochin rooster is a barred (do you call them barred rock? He is gray and white)? My new girls are all Black Cochin hens....well one hen (the mom) and her three pullets the same age as Harry.

What will I get if he breeds them and I hatch the eggs? I am just so tickled to have finally found some girls for him I really don't care.

Yeah me! And yeah Harry....he has been so lonely.
