Cochin Thread!!!

It sounds like your male bird is a Barred Cochin. A Rock is a different breed (Plymouth Rock). A barred male X Black female will produce Barred offspring although they will be very dark. the males will be decently colored but the females will be fairly dark and the barring won't be as clear as it should be. Selective breeding can result in the proper pattern and color.

My hubby asked last night (in a disgusted tone of voice) why there were more eggs in the incubator.

Silly question.

I got a shipment of cochin eggs from CA that I was trying to keep from hubby. Well he went into the Post Office to buy some stamps and they gave him the eggs. ROFL!!!

He came in with the box and said, "Ummm did you forget about something?" "Oh those? Yea, I guess I did!"

I've had the same 20 eggs in the incubator for 3 months. LMAO!!!!!

I hope he didn't give them a good shake before he brought them home.

The chicks in the bathtub in the spare bathroom tends to give me away.

I knew it was not Barred 'rock'.....just did not know for sure what they were called in cochins. I have a Barred Rock flock. Actually we got this boy at the same time as we got our BR rooster....just did not notice his feet. It really took him a long time to mature that's for sure!
And at this point I am just proud to be able to find my little flock of hens for him. So, now I have gone from one coop and run to two coops and runs and will be having a third one soon.
All I have to do it get out there with my DH's power tools and everyone will come running.....not to help me but to save the tools! Then Harry and the girls will have their new digs!

michickenwrangler.....it has taken me right at six months! I am very pleased with the hens I am getting. The lady is a tester for NPIP so I feel pretty good about the hens.....will still quarantine. It seems there are Bantam Cochins everywhere...it is the LF Cochins that are hard to find.

I am looking forward to picking them up on Friday and bringing them home! I have only seen their pictures and they are really pretty. Just glad to have the company for my cochin roo!

I am just getting started with the little fluffy soccer balls. lol. I have a pair of black bantam cochins and just hatched one barred, one red and one gold laced. Ok so question is which variety that is "endangered" should I try working on? It doesn't really matter to me as they are all adorable. I would like to be able to kind of use some of the ones I already have. The black pair came from Bill Zeihm. Don't know if anyone knows who he is or not. The babies came from someone on ebay in Maryland. I do not have a breeding project going as of yet. Plan on doing sebrights both silver and gold but would like to work on cochins as well due to their lovable attitude. These chicks are the friendliest I have hatched out, and I have tried to get the others tame but they (egg laying mutts, ee, and ee/silkie cross and jersey giants) just aren't very friendly.

Yes, I'm a member of CI.

Problem is that everyone wants their birds and the supply doesn't match the demand

I know folks here in Maine who are still waiting....
