Cochin Thread!!!

I need some ideas for the CHEAPEST way to make a breeding pen that is only going to be used in the spring/summer and it has to be predator proof since i am going to keep the pen outside. They are bantam cochins.

Thanks

Type in PVC in the search at the top of the page. There are several ideas there. I would use welded wire or cage wire with hex wire going a foot or so up to keep babies in and across the floor to keep varmints from tunneling in.
More proficient DIYers probably have better ideas, but I'm cheap, lazy, and construction-challenged!

I can put one of these together in a day. I put skirting around the bottom, use hardware cloth and try to make them good enough for summer shade and to catch breezes. Most of mine measure 4x6x3. They have stood up to 60 mph winds and not flipped over like the dog kennel with tarps did. Dogs tried to dig under with no success.

They do well in the snow, too.

And here with a bantam Cochin roo and 4 hens.

The only thing I have not done is put nesting boxes in them and I need to but they often lay on the grass, anyhow.
I would mount them like I did in this tractor.

I like your chicken tractors - I am going to have to build one for my Banty Buff Cochin roos as soon as the snow melts - that might be in July here in NW Ohio!.......I just hatched out 20 NH babies - well the eggs were all from my NH hens - but some little banty Cochin roo got to my hens and I now have 3 little fuzz butts out of 20 that have feathered feet - now I KNOW my NH's do not have feathered feet!!!! I just never thought the Cochins could get to the NH hens, now I know better - they really have a big attitude, don't they?! Now I have some strange breeding and not sure what they will look like when they get bigger or what I will do with NH + Cochin chicks!

Cochinman, we recently discussed back length in the LF males, and how that relates to the overall appearance of a large bird. How does that white male stack up?

I set 60 GLC x Black and Black x GLC eggs today in the new Brinsea 190.

I like all the automation, but the automatic humidity pump does not pump sufficient water, even running constantly, to keep the humidity where I want it.

Oh, that's so cruel, Tom, to flaunt that beautiful BC for me to see! (Just kidding!!) You're hard work with them is really paying off to bring the BC's back to the forefront!

Maybe we can talk if/when you have an extra hen that might help with my GL's.
