I personally twist them off when they get too long otherwise I never trim them. With the show that close I'd just use dog nail cutters and cut the point off. They will bleed a little when you twist them off but it's nothing to worry about and they don't even seem to notice.
I also got BV with a cockerel that was in a bad fight and had a really scabbed up comb so I don't think that would be anything to worry about
