Cochin Thread!!!

Hi everyone, Does anyone have any special tips for showing cochins ? I am showing cochins in the county fair a little over a week from now. I am nervous but I think I will do okay.

I have a wonderful white bantam cochin roo and one white hen who is gorgeous but refuses to lay eggs.

Amongst my 27 cochins, I have hens in black, blue, barred and some pullets in buff, red and mille fleur.

Considering what I have now, what can I breed to this roo to make something "usable"?

Or should I just wait and hope that I find a couple of white hens to buy???

Beautiful pair!
I know I have crossed my white roos over some MFC hens to see what I would get. I like the Calicos so it wasn't a problem to me if the white washed the color out but since bantam white Cochins seem to be recessive white that did not happen for me and I got some really nice chicks. It added type back in to my program and gave me more diversity of bloodlines I could use in the future if I wanted to.

You also can cross your barred with the white for for neat chicks. I would not cross to red or even buff but I might try the blue.

Good luck buying some nice white hens or pullets. It can be so hard to find any. I have 2 pens of whites and about 30 chicks growing up. They do not sell extremely well but I got down to only a pair with an extra roo and was traumatized knowing my hen was 8 years old. She didn't lay much any more and I had to rush out and buy more pullets and hens. That was expensive! But now I breath easier with all the white chicks growing up.

ETA: Thank you all with the nice compliments on the Mottled gang. The originals are from very good breeders and I have just kept hatching out all the really nice kids. They are one of my most precious flocks of birds. I love sitting in their pen and having them talk to me and sit in my lap for some ear rubs.
