Cochin Thread!!!

Here are my broodies. They hatched out 17 call ducklings and are now sitting on 21 MFC eggs. They are way better than any incubator I ever had!

I used to have a Buff girl and a White girl and they sat on 20 eggs, hatched every single one out!

Oh, they're beautiful!!! I don't use an incubator any more either -- my hens are way more efficient than electricity.

To the folks using their hens as broodies... Do you generally take the chicks away as soon as they are hatched, or let the hens raise them?

Those girls have some beautiful color !!! What a time you all on the east coast must have had. Glad the hotel was accommodating! I have sure been thinking about fellow poultry owners going thru such weather.

I have 2 cochins hens that are always broody, a white one and a black one.. last year the white one sat on and hatched an EE egg, and was a super mom. I tried her again this spring, and she ate the eggs! I gave the black cochin a try, and she sat on and hatched 3 eggs, she ate 2 as soon as they hatched, I saved one!

I've just put some eggs under my white one again because she is relentless! she will just sit in a empty nest being all broody! I've put her on about 5 eggs in a large dog crate with food and water.... is there any other tips or suggestions you can give me to help her out?

thanks
Sue

Thanks for sharing the pic. I have a pair that were hatched in April. The pullet is so much smaller that the roo I wonder if that is typical? I have 1 LF Buff hen that is huge. I guess this is a question for the LF Cochin thread.
