Cochin Thread!!!

No cochin this thanksgiving but have eaten a few nasty bantam roos, was pleasantly surprised at how well rounded they were! Really didn't want to but they were super mean and no one else wanted them, waste not - want not huh?

Hello! I realize this is off the topic, but I saw "Cochin Thread" and couldn't resist. Is it me or are Cochins one of the SWEETEST breeds? Our poor Cochin Boots got her crown picked at pretty badly. She's been separated from the others (5 hens) for almost 2 months. Everytime I let them free range together the 5 go right for her head and she just 'squats' and lets them pick/pluck at her. I wish it was just 1 picking on Boots, but it's all 5 of them (it'd be easier to separate THEM out)....I have been thinking about making her a little leather 'cap' for Boots so that when the others go for her head they can't damage it more than they have already...she really misses being part of the flock.

Has anyone ever heard of such a thing (leather or 'cap' for a chicken)?? Am I crazy? I would love for her to be able to be with the others. They see each other all the time, just in separate pens, and she really wants to roam, but unless I'm there watching, I don't trust anyone.

Thanks for reading...any ideas would be WONDERFUL...I hope I haven't kept her out of the flock so long they'll never accept her back in...we thought about getting another Cochin to keep her company. Are they good about accepting others into their flock?

I was thinking of the same exact thing. "hen helmets", except made of metal (so it would maybe hurt the beaks of the ones doing the pecking and make them quit). Maybe we should invent these. Hen Helmets, I like it!

I stumbled upon this site earlier tonight, and thought I would share it with you guys.

The site belongs to Mike Wahl. I bought birds from him many years ago. In fact, my first ever SQ birds came from Mike. These pics are over 5-6 years old and I dont think Mike even raises birds anymore. But he had some very nice birds as you can see in the pics. The SL are very nice.

Here are my two bantam cochin ladies. They tend to stick together and are two of the sweetest (and silkiest) birds I own!

Thank you! I am hoping the one on the left keeps the white feathering on her head. It has been getting darker as she ages.

We eat Cochin all the time but we had ham and venison for Thanksgiving. Cochin is a weekly meal here.

When you hatch a lot of eggs and half are roos which do not always sell then you have to do something with the ugly ones. Okay, not ugly but not useful for my breeding programs. I have about 11 Cochin roos that are just hanging out hoping I have an extra girl or two to pen with them. I have 3 roos that live with the Muscovy and 3 more that live with the free ranging ducks.

Remember, you asked!
