Cochin Thread!!!

Geez, I must be a die hard Cochin addict. I hatch Cochins all year around.
Though I have slowed to only about a dz a week right now, sometimes 2 dz. My bantam Cochins lay so much better in the winter than in the summer when it is so very hot and humid.

I am hatching Mottleds, Mille Fleur project, blue Mottled/Splash project and just some awesome typy neat colored bantam Cochins to go in my Frizzle pens.

I only have 4 brooders down in the barn now that are 4' and 6' long. I have a small brooder in the house for new chicks and we are raising d'Uccles in another cage in the house.

I hatch when they lay. I swore I would not hatch after Oct this year but at least I have cut back.

All the chicks hatching now will be such a great boost for spring and I may get some entered in shows late spring if they look nice enough to put out there.

Come on everyone! We have to have world Cochin domination!

What color is the big one in the second from last pic?

That's Kernel my blind WL/EE cross (standard size) rooster and I have no idea what to call his color.

He is awesome looking no matter what! I have a couple partially blind birds and they are the best!

ABSOLUTELY! Lately, on the Okie thread, there have been way too many pics of Asils and Shamos, both LF and bantam -
I've got to look both ways before I say this...........They sure are ugly chickens! Turkens are cute compared to them!................

Hello!

I posted this question on the breed, genetics, and showing index and have had only a few look, with no response. I am starting over, and was really wanting to purchase bantam cochin hatching eggs.

I would like to know if this breed is healthy. Are they typically a strong breed or are they more prone to illness?

Any help would be appreciated. I don't want to start over with another sickly breed.

I think the problem you had was not per say a "sickly breed", but more of unhealthy breeding. You will find that alot of people who do this as a "hobby" are actually doing it to make money. They care nothing of the healthy breedings and practices true breeders are involved in, as long as the bird looks good, they think they should try and profit from it. Thats why its nice to be self aware of people throwing out the term SQ likes its candy at a parade. Cochins are generally a healthy and hearty breed, they originated in China so the breed itself can withstand the cold and heat pretty well. Just do some research before you decide who to buy from, and choose someone with experience and knowledge of the breed and how to properly breed and manage a flock. Just be aware of the fakeness of it all.
