Cochin Thread!!!

There has been so little activity on the Cochin thread for a while. Is it the new format or that like me nothing new is happening while I wait out winter. Wishing you all a good hatch soon!
Craig

Sadly, there is nothing new here. I am still looking for some nice columbian hens to go with my columbian roo. My black cochin bantams are doing well, but not laying right now. I am anxiously awaiting eggs to put in the bator. Also looking forward to taking my frizzled cochin bantam girl and my columbian roo to the spring show in Sedalia.

I gave "George" a bath yesterday. He's upstairs in my house in the "Chick Room" to dry completely.

Too bad he doesn't realize that humans sleep later than 3 am

While I am here, I have a question. My columbian roo carries his wings lower than I would like him to. I read somewhere (maybe this thread) that if they do not have a chance to fly up to a perch, the muscles that allow them to hold them properly become weak. My roo has never had a perch and does not get a chance to free range. Is it possible to exercise his wings and see if he carries them higher, or am I just talking crazy? Here is a pic of him.

I have similar issues. I have roosts in my Columbian cages and they just don't use the available roost. It can't hurt them to exercise. I find my male wings are always carried lower than the hens. I will have Columbians at the Sedalia show in April also. Look forward to meeting you.

Craig!!! Does he have that gorgeous penciling? Well, I should say does he come from that gorgeous penciling? You know that type matters to me, I'll buy him.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE. He could be just the guy I need to work with my original hens that have good penciling. Did you see the post from Tom in the genetics thread about my Partridges?

When I say he is good you know I mean it. He comes from outstanding penciling. He still isn't as good as his dad. I always tell it like I see it.If I could find my old uploads on BYC or how to get to it so I can post a picture of him. Some of the new BYC is frustrating as @#11. I was going to show him at the CI Western Nationals in April at Sedalia, Mo then we can talk about getting him to you. The other Partridge I have are going to AnnaMay after I show them in April.

Yes I know, I absolutely trust your assessment. I'm beyond excited!! This is just what I need. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
I know what you mean about posting pictures. I had a terrible time and ended up just copying and pasting rather than using their tool. I could never get it to work, it just kept giving me a temporary error message.

Hi guys!

It's been a LONG time since I've been on BYC! But Craig's been bugging me to come back, so here I am.

We're in the process of moving, so the birds are all being taken care of by relatives and my husband and I are living in town about a half-hour away. If the bank cooperates, we'll be in our new place and I'll have all my birdies again within a month!

In the meantime, here's a picture I took yesterday when we went over to check them all after the temperature dipped to -13 degrees overnight! Brrrrr! Happy to report that all 23 Cochins are just fine, although 2 or 3 of the roos suffered some frostbite damage to their combs.

Craig - I'm going to get some pictures of the babies I hatched from these 2 last year - I didn't hatch any out until probably mid-August, so they're not even 6 months old yet. None of them looked really happy about me opening their coop and letting all the cold air in!

I did manage to grab one of their daughters and snap a picture outside quick (one of the other pullets had a MAJOR picking problem and did a number on her feathers, but the mean little picker has since been removed to another pen with a big, old roo that doesn't put up with it!)
