Do "White Frizzle Cochins" come is Standard size? Or is it pretty well-known that they are only come in bantam size?

Went to a feed store and bought what I thought were Light Brahma chicks. After I got home I looked up what Light Brahma chicks are REALLY suppose to look like. These chicks are not Light Brahmas. I looked into their looks some more and they are definitely White Frizzle Cochins. They have feathered feet like the Brahmas so I thought I was set. Nope, I was wrong. They are def. white frizzle cochins. The feed store said they will trade me for other chicks that I would like better. But, before I return or trade them I wanted to know if these litter buggers could be standard size. I prefer standards. If they are only bred to be bantams, then I will definitely return them or trade them.

Hi all,

I have been lurking and learning for quite a while. I got hooked on cochins about 2 years ago and just moved to the country where I can finally have roosters and set up some breeding pens! These are two of my splash cochins from Stephanie. I have 2 black cochin cockerels that arrived last week to put into a pen with my splash girls this spring. I will try to get pics up of them soon. Thanks for everyone for all your great info. I have learned so much just by reading this thread! (sorry for dirty birdies, they have been out in the dirt and mud enjoying this crazy warm weather we have been having)

Frizzles can come in any breed, standard or bantam. It is possible to get Standard Cochin frizzles, but you will not get them from a hatchery or any place that got them from one. They are not easy to come by and there are no hatcheries that offer any standard varieties, only Bantam Cochins. And you will not know if the bird is frizzled until it gets older and develops wing feathers. Until that point there is no difference in appearance from other chicks. That chick is for sure not a Brahma, looks like a Cochin, Red, Buff, or White. Not sure wether it is a Standard or not, although ir doesnt look like it will be.

What you have pictured should be plenty big. I was a bit confused - are all 7 birds going in one breeding pen? If so, you may want something a bit bigger, especially with 3 males. But if the pairs and trio are all going into separate cages, it's fine. For temporary breeding cages, they don't need much room. I found a bunch of old rabbit hutches on CL - I use the smaller for pairs, and the larger for trios.

wow i'm jealous. LOL i'd love to have some of those... maybe i can make some pretty easily. what's the roof like? would it be weather proof? I don't have any place under cover, so my roofs all extend way over on the sides to keep rain to a minimum. fortunately we live on the side of a mountain so most of the wind goes overhead and very little gets down to the ground. 8)

and yes, i was talking separating the colors. otherwise i'd just leave them all free ranging and let them do what they want. 8)

so i guess if i do something like the 8x2-3' wide that should be fine... what i'm thinking is doing an 8x8 frame and dividing it into 3 rows with cover on one end for nest/roost and open the rest for room to move around.

splash is related to blue. breed splash to black you get 100% blue, splash to splash 100% splash. splash to blue or blue to black you get 50/50 (same colors as parents). so anyone selling BBS that's what they mean, blue/ black/ splash.

oh and breeding blue to blue, you get 50% blue 25% each splash and black. statistically. not all eggs understand statistics tho, so one hatch you might get all blacks, another you might get all blue. LOL

My bantam hen is setting once again. She won't set in a nest box but only on the cage floor. Is that a problem.

I raise and sell Splash. Mine have very good type. I am breeding a Blue Mottled Roo to Splash hens to darken up the color a bit and continue improving on type. I will have started birds to sell in April/May.
