Cochin Thread!!!

Unless there is some particular quality in your red hen that you just HAVE to have, it would not be a good idea to breed her. You will get some chicks with wings that are OK, but you'll end up with probably the majority that have split wing, plus the ones that don't show it, could be carrying the gene.
It is VERY heritable.
ok thanks. no she has no exceptional traits except personality, and IMO all cochins have that lol

so she's back in the dorking pen then... only because that's the 'egg pen' right now, and he's nice to her, unlike the EE roos who are harrassing her to no end, plucking and otherwise bullying... and are headed to sale/freezer next saturday. (i other words, if nobody else wants them, i'll eat em. but i give them a chance first LOL)

My sincerest apologies to anyone that may have received any spam emails from me in the past couple of days. My email account got hacked thru one of the Yahoo groups that I belong to, and I have now closed my membership to both groups (Mille Fleur Cochins and Calico Cochins). I have been in contact with my email provider, and they are doing what they can to stop the auto-forwarding of the spam emails to everyone in my address book.

I am not the first one in the Mille Fleur Cochin group on Yahoo to have their email hacked - so please be careful if you belong to the group.

If you receive any of these emails from me with a wierd subject line, please just delete them. I am NOT selling or promoting any work/make money at home schemes!

Yes, it's known as vent sexing and it takes A LOT of practice. I saw a video on sexing ducks which is much easier, they have an actual penis that is visible. Chickens have the same equipment only theirs if very, very tiny and if you don't know what you're looking for you will too easily miss it. There is another way to feather sex them at a few days old, but I don't know that technique. Mandy from the Cochin Coop can do it.

hi everyone, I was wondering is there a way to visually sex day old cochin chicks? Any methods at all?

Twyla, here are some pictures of my mottled chicks.

They are really cute and they are starting to look all round and fluffy!!

How old are they? I also have cochin chicks growing out they take so long to fully feather, I find it very hard to gauge ages by looking at pictures.

I'm pretty sure if there are two layres of feathers they are hans and if the feathers are all equal in length its a roo. i seen this online. Not sure if it's accurate or not. Also, I bught a cochin last night and want to know your opinions. I'll be posting pics later.

I was just going to warn you that I was getting these emails! I knew you wouldn't be sending something like that~ Seems like it happens a lot on the Yahoo sites.
