Cochin Thread!!!

So has anyone ever heard of a bearded cochin??
So I bought mille fluer hatching eggs then one of my own eggs from our cross cochin. I have one little hen that looks just like my other two pure cochins except she's got the toes of a silkie....which all the "pure mille fluer" cochin eggs I bought had those silkie toes too...and funky bed head on couple of roo's....I've seen silkie cochin crosses before but usually not so cochin looking and usually have feathers on head that are messy....this little girl looks very cochin but has this perfect beard...ever heard of this??
I would post picture but I can't figure it out from my phone
I think its super cute..

I am sorry to say they are just mixed breed birds then. Cochins do not have beards nor 5 toes. I have crossed my Silkies with my Cochins in the past to get birds to work with in my Sizzle and Frizzle pens but that is just what they were....crossed or mixed.
I hope that the person that sold you the Mille Fleur eggs told you they were crossed or perhaps forgot to tell you they were d'Uccle instead of Cochin. That breed does have muffs and a beard and feathered legs.
Are you sure they were sold as Cochin eggs? And not just Mille Fleur?
Some people get confused on thinking that MF is a breed, not a color/pattern.

I just realized the 'tag' at the bottom of your posts doesn't list Partridge, but you show some on your website. Did you sell all your Partridge stock? (Oops! 'took another look and they are shown under Buff Columbian?) I don't know how you breeders choose which colors/patterns to work on - they are all beautiful. I love all the talk about the colors - I learn so much.

As one who doesn't understand all the color genetics, what would be the difference between a Calico (

) and a buff mottled? The breeding behind it?

having a hard time posting with our new IPad, sigh.... I love the blue mottled hen, she's just beautiful

Hi Deb~ No, I don't have any Partridge just the Buff Columbians. When I saw the Buff Columbians, I fell in love with them. I was offered a pair with some blues I bought a few years ago and scooped them up pretty fast. I was also fortunate enough to get a few hens by asking here on this thread. Then, last year I found a gorgeous roo from Msbear. I am watching a few of his offspring grow up right now to determine their quality before I move forward.
The difference between a Calico and a Buff Mottled...I'm not sure anyone is working on any Buff Mottled Project, I have never seen any. The Calico is basically a Mille Fleur Cochin with extreme amounts of white. The Calico will still have small amounts of black feathers where a buff mottled would have no black at all~

if i remember from my reading, calico is the same genetically as the mille fleur, just not marked quite right. a buff mottled doesn't have any black in her, like the calico/mille should. the buff mottled is simply mottled on a solid buff base. you can have mottled on any solid color base I think (even white, but why bother?) the calico/mille uses the buff columbian to bring in the buff and black markings to add to the white of the mottled. the hard part would be breeding for those that spread the mottling and black markings over all the feathers evenly I think? I prefer the calico myself but partly because i still don't understand what a mille is really SUPPOSED to be marked like. LOL I've seen a bunch that i think are close to ideal but don't know if there even is an ideal, or just a general overall impression. (as to color, not type)

Mille Fleur is a color with a particular feather pattern, the hen is marked one way and the cockerel marked another. If you look at the color Mille Fleur on the d'Uccle breed, that will show you what the color should look.
The Calico evolved from the Mille Fleur Cochin project and in actuality it came from incorrect breedings while trying to develop the MF. The Calico is a mixture of red or buff, white and black feathers. Each feather of each color is a solid color i.e., solid white, solid red, solid buff, and solid black feathers and they are mixed all over the body of the bird. The roos have the same look as the hens, unlike the Mille Fleur which has a distinctly different color pattern on the roos and the hens.

ok thanks for that. 8) I hadn't seen it explained so simply i guess.

if you could post a pic it might also help. but cochins don't have beards and 5 toes. Faverolles have both those qualities but their skin is white and the earlobes should be red (but it is too common for them to be enameled or fully white lobed). Silkie would be my other guess if the skin was black and the earlobes had a bluish cast to them. other than that it is probably a mix.

For any of you who do not have a SOP (Standard of Perfection) please check out the Cochin Breed Club site. The link is in my signature at the bottom of this post. Click on Breed Standards, it has the information that all Cochins are judged on. This also has pictures of some but not all recognized varieties of Cochins both large and bantam.

The pictures are a nice touch!
Thank you

Thanx Craig!

I hope everyone knows that the Cochins International website, as well as the Forum, is for everyone, whether you are a member or not. Although of course we encourage all Cochin Lovers to join and support the promotion of our breed and our programs!

I didn't know whether or laugh or cry this weekend when I read my Poultry Press and saw that Matt referred to me as a Jack-of-all-Trades!! But I will take it as a compliment and say Thank-you! But what is important for everyone to know is that Cochins International is everyone's Club, whether you own Bantams or LF, whether you show or not, and whether you are a Junior or a Junior-at-Heart.

We are always open to suggestions for the Club, our Meets, and our Website. There are links on the website to all your Officers and District Directors - all who love to talk Cochin! And if you find a Cochin Club table at a show near you, be sure and stop by and say Hi!

I only have one cockeral and pullet Cochin bantam. A week ago she has layed her first six eggs! I am so excited, soon there may be baby cochin bantams!
