Cochin Thread!!!

I came on here tonight wanting to see if someone can tell me about trimming a cochins butt. Either my male is shooting blanks or they need trimming! I have never done this and really dont know how to do it.
I have looked for youtube videos but only found AI videos which I may try.

What are your thoughts.....

Thanks
Tony

I looked in on my broody BC and my MF today and low and behold, Mildred has left the nest to be replaced by Millie (my MFCs)! I didn't realize Millie was thinking about going broody! Mildred even started laying again already - I know it's her because she insists on pooing on her eggs after she lays them. Bridgette (BC) is a very diligent and dedicated broody. This is her second round. The first round all the eggs were duds and she went broody during the coldest 2 weeks of our winter. She was off the nest for about 3 weeks, just started to lay regularly again and went broody on a dummy egg. She never laid her own clutch first. She's on 10 eggs from WestKnollAmy and they are due to hatch in the next 4 days. I just gave the MFC girls 5 Ameraucana eggs. These broody bantam MF Cochins are crazy... At least I can rely on my BC and Silkies.

I trimmed mine for the first time 3 weeks ago. I don't know if I did it right, but I trimmed all feathers around the vent on both but went above the vent more of the girls and below the vent mor eon the boys (about 3"). I must have done something right... My MFCs' eggs are fertile now, when they weren't before.

I have 4 designated broodies (3 different pens) sitting on Butterscotch Call duck eggs, due on 4/24. I'm getting excited!

well i trimmed my white roo and white frizzle girl when they got their baths. below the vent for the roo above the vent for the hen. i just used scissors and snipped off the fluff to make easier access. no idea if it's worked yet, she's only laid 4 eggs so far. i'm waiting for a couple more to incubate them. i know if you pluck they grow back faster. i'm not worried about that really, but he had a lot of mud/turd balls on his fluff when i got them, so the trimming was twofold purpose.

If you are getting fertile eggs then you did trim them correctly.
