Cochin Thread!!!

Are cochins gentle breeders? I have to rehome my RIR roo because he is too rough on the girls but I wanna replace him with something that may be a bit gentler... their backs are bleeding from the poor guy! I love cochins...

My LF Cochin roo has never left a mark on my girls. Our last roo (Black Ameracauna) was considerably rougher on the girls and it's nice to have a 'gentleman' roo in charge of the flock now. I highly recommend Cochin roosters.....

Not to me. Just a smooth feather cochin that has a ways to go as far feather development in my opinion.

I love this thread I don't post much have learned a ton from it as a "newbie" to Cochins! I bought my 2 girls from a show quality breeder, but of course she couldn't gaurantee show quality as they were chicks when I got them. They are 18 weeks old now. Do you all think they are show quality? I have kept in touch with the breeder and sent her pictures and she thinks I should take them to a show in August that she's going to. She is kind of my Cochin mentor LOL What do you all think? The feather down their toes and yellow bottom feet all meet the requirements. I know Splashes are not a recognized colour but they have a "Other Variety" category under Cochins she is eligible for at this show.

I know the pictures are not the best, just snapped them this morning. Free ranging.

They are Large Fowl - Correct?
Good points: I really like the nice defined lacing on the Blue, and both carry their wings up above the thigh fluff.
Not so good points: The tail on the Splash appears, at least in the photos, to be "pinched", and the Blue has a "split" breast. The pinched tail might improve as she matures, but I don't think the split breast will go away. The lacing on the Blue appears good as I said, but it also emphasizes the very uneven lengths of her feathers.

i agree, none of my cochin pens has that issue.

I don't have problems with bleeding backs, but I do have several hens with bald heads where the cocks hold on. I'm sure a lot of this has more to do with the overall round shape of Cochins (and not the gentle nature of the males) - the males just don't seem to mount quite the same as other breeds.

now that you mention this, that's probably why i noticed the feathers on my self blue's head thinner than the blacks' heads... she's his favorite.

Yes, they are Large Fowl Thank you so much for your response! I love how much I am learning from this website (and this thread!). The show is just a small, 1 day, laid back show at a rodeo fair. I would love to go just for the experience, and to talk to and meet more breeders.
