I have hatched three black bantam cockerals, one whom is completly black but the other two also black but have grown faint gold/brassy colouring in thier hackles at about 10 weeks old. They have mixed colour genes of black, lavender and cuckoo. why has this happened?

They are young and could change but I doubt it. . When you have mixed genes you can not predict the outcomes.

Hey, just been talking to a friend who I sold a pair of lavender pekins(bantam cochins) to, they already have a lemon cuckoo hen and want to breed out of the trio, does any one know what they might get?

very nice. I wish they would call it lavender here in the states, but insist on sticking with self blue, which confuses too many people IMO...

I'm not sure what goes into making the lemon part of the cuckoo, but the offspring from the lemon cuckoo hen, pullets would be non-barred, cockerels would be barred. as to the rest of the color, No idea. if it's a lemon blue with barring, then probably they could also get some lemon blues, or maybe brown reds? i'm just guessing here tho.

but at least the pure lavender/self blues would be obvious.

Self Blue X Self Blue is Self Blue as stated above.

Self Blue X Lemon Cuckoo is an interesting pet and nothing more.

As for the comment by another about Self Blue being a confusing name. I say it couldn't be simpler. You breed Self Blue to Self blue and you get Self Blue hence the designation.

it seems, with the exception of blue, if you breed any color to itself you get the same... so why don't we have self buff, or self black, or self white, or self red... and the list can go on... just my own personal opinion.

That is why it is Blue that is not as easy to teach a new person. Blue to Blue does not give you only Blue. The APA and ABA gave the name Self Blue decades ago because it describes it accurately. You are entitled to your opinion and I mine. Mine goes with the people in the know who wrote the SOP and Bantam Standard.

My first Cochin so far. Unimaginatively named "Cucina." She is the youngest of my bunch but holds her own. How can anyone resist a Cochin chick??

My own bantam Cochin is about 18 weeks old. She has suddenly developed quite a bad attitude, pecking at me if I pet her. Today it felt like she actually bit me. I also noticed her acting like a little queen bee with some of the younger birds that live in her run. This is all new behavior from her. Could it be hormonal? Perhaps she is close to starting to lay? I don't know if bantams start earlier or later than LF, or if that doesn't make a difference. My hope is that this mean streak will subside when she starts to lay. Is that at all likely?

i had a similar issue with mine, she pecked me every time i stroked her, then as she started laying she became friendly, no more pecking She is friendly now, but was the meanest thing before she started laying.

i never understood the colours.

Self Blue (here called lavender) = grey, definitely not lavender or blue really.
Silver laced = white and black
Gold laced = brown/orange and black.

Self blue, hmm. I have however seen a flock of actual "blues" i think in this very thread, and they are magnificent.
