Cochin Thread!!!

Im not sure to be honest, thats why I didnt say anything. I dont like giving my opinion about things like this, because I am unsure if its correct. Id rather not say anything feeling unsure, than spread false information accidently. But, since you twisted my arm and all, lol, I believe its something to do with nutrients, vitamins something like that? I notice it in females that have layed regularly for a while, and also birds that are broody. I also think it is a sign of calmness, being scared, etc. and they can control exactly how red they want their face to be, but I really dont know. I thought I read that somewhere, but cant remember where.

that's part of what i *didn't* like about my white pair i had (and sold again)... the white frizzle girl looked positively anemic. even after she started laying again.

I have a hatchery silver laced rooster pet that has fused outer toes on both feet. He isn't much other than a lap chicken, but that's ok as I have lots of others.

As I recall I read somewhere that it was related to too high temperature during incubation. I think it had to do with the rate of embryo development as I recall. I'll see if I can refine the article and post a reference.

EDIT in relooking for the mentioned reference I was apparently mistaken. Most references refer to it as a generic defect and/or folic acid deficiency in the parent stock. If you Google search for poultry fused toes you ahold find volumes of info.

Thanks Dave,

I have/had a real problem with foot/leg defects in my line of partridge bantams. I always suspected it was genetics, but I kept breeding them because more experienced hatchers thought it was an incubator issue. I bought a new hovabator 1588 with a turner, and continued to have the same problems, when I have no defects in my other breeds of chicks. With each successive generation the problem cropped up more frequently and more severely. My last hatch I had bred a pullet back to the parent cock, and I lost one third of the chicks. They not only had the same foot defects I had been seeing all along, but also failure to thrive. I sold all of the old stock except one pullet for my daughter to used for showmanship. We are currently incubating eggs for a new color of cochins. I hope I won't see that problem any more. I wonder how common it is? I didn't find anything when did a few searches.

In general terms it's likely best to have started with different stock rather than working to breed it out. One thing I did note is that fused toes seemed more of a problem in some breeds rather than others. For example, many postings I came across were for Marens. I don't know if it's specific to certain lines or just a fluke in them. There was also a few from brahma breeders too. I guess it can get over looked on heavy feather footed breeds like Cochins. In fact I didn't notice mine until he was several weeks old as it didn't affect his ability to get around - some have a great deal of difficulty that way.

The craziest thing I found was people trying to do surgery to correct the issue - as if that would make it go away! Sometimes we just have to be more concerned for the bird than for our selfish interests.

gorgeous birds. I always love the whites, but for some reason I can't keep a white animal white whtout frequent bathing. LOL that applies to my 2 paint horses (buckskin and palomino paints), my white std poodle, or my white cochins. they all end up various shades of beige.

gotta love that red virginia clay...

That is why I try not to keep white birds! Here it isn't too bad because our soil is so sandy! I hate dirty looking birds.

Just wanted to share a few pics. Hope everyone enjoys. :)

And here is a pic of the little frizzle pullet I mentioned a while back. After loosing the best 2 I had, I was left with one frizzle pullet. She is still good, but nothing like what I lost. Thankfully one of the younger birds turned out to be a pullet, and she looks like a dandy. None of my other frizzles looked like this at this age, she is just shy of 8 weeks, pic was taken last week.
